Something New On The (Vertical) Horizon: "All Is Said And Done"
Website: http://www.improvingcommunications.com Music: http://www.myspace.com/verticalhorizon Subtly and quietly, Vertical Horizon once again proved to be the Mouse that Roared. For the past few years, the band has remained on the bench, prepping for a grand slam. On October 19, 2008 they scored a base hit, possibly a double. You see, on that third Sunday in October, both Matt Scannell’s and Vertical Horizon’s MySpace pages announced a new track that was added to each page’s jukebox – “All Is Said and Done.” Keeping true to themselves and their grass-roots marketing, the song was released with little fanfare. Its reception by the audience – that’s a different story. There have been over 8000 plays in the first four days. Listen to the song! (An homage to Boston’s debut album liner notes.) Scannell has grown tremendously as a songwriter and crafter of music. “All Is Said and Done” has a strong reliance on the offbeat, yet is eminently able to be followed. Starting with the double vocal on the intro and underscored by various low and high percussive effects, the new track instantly creates a rich soundscape entered by an almost eerie-sounding symphonic overtone. This opens the door for a drums-and-bass driven groove. The deep, yet simple bass and effective use of breaks highlight the swells in the varying audio textures. Listen to the song! Lyrically speaking, “All Is Said and Done” is complex. Rich with imagery, it can remind the audience of growing weary with someone who does it all, and the attaining of the impossible: Are you tired / Of holding up the sky? / Of teaching birds to fly? / You’ve done it all your life. Scannell seems to be examining the empty existence of a “superhero” and the extrication from her/his life: “I tried to belong here / with all of the ghosts and faded headlines. / But I couldn’t read you / you wouldn’t let me / you always pull away from the ones you can’t define.” Make no mistake about it, “All Is Said and Done” is infectious. The sample tells listeners that the rest of this upcoming album, Burning the Days, holds great promise for the faithful. Drummer Neil Peart of Rush will appear on three tracks, having collaborated with Scannell on at least one of them. Once, I saw an instructional video clip with Matt Scannell teaching some aspects of playing solos on guitar. A key point he made was not to start with the best licks first – always to build to it. You can be sure he’s living this mantra with “All Is Said and Done.” And if that’s the case, it’s mind-boggling to realize that we’re awaiting the band’s best album yet! Vertical Horizon has officially joined the likes of Peter Gabriel where it comes to releasing music – it takes a long time, but as always, it’s worth the wait.
