PRS For Music And Rara.com Sign Licensing Deal

Bookmark and Share
PRS for Music, the organisation that represents the rights of 85,000 songwriters, composers and music publishers in the UK, has announced a licensing agreement with rara.com, the new digital streaming service. The deal will enable the music creators that PRS for Music represents, to earn when their music is accessed via the subscription-based web service.

The deal is a pan-European rights agreement for the repertoire PRS for Music represents, enabling rara.com to operate in multiple European countries. The deal was negotiated by Omnifone, whose next-generation digital music service delivery platform powers rara.com globally.

rara.com is a revolutionary new streaming service aimed at the mass market which allows music lovers to listen to millions of tracks through a web browser or mobile device for a monthly subscription fee. The service provides ad-free music from just 99p/99c per month and has a potential market reach of 900m people worldwide.

Robert Ashcroft Chief Executive of PRS for Music said: "PRS for Music has led the way in licensing innovative new digital music services, providing new income streams for creators and further choice for the UK's growing online music audience. As our music consumption habits change, it is vital that new services such as rara.com are effectively licensed. This is an excellent offering and we welcome its entry into the UK music market."

Rob Lewis, Chief Executive of rara.com said: "rara.com is committed to working closely with artists to ensure their creativity is rewarded.

"In addition to providing musicians with a global platform for their music, which can be accessed using a range of devices, we are also targeting the mass market with DJ-curated radio channels which bring music discovery back to the digital experience. The combination of these factors provides an increased audience for artists across the board.

Jez Bell, Director of Licensing for Omnifone adds: "Working closely with rights holders to license a great range of content for the next-generation music services powered by Omnifone is our priority, and alongside PRS for Music, we're striving to redress the damage done to the music industry by online piracy."
