Target Corporation Grant Brings Garbage Percussion Workshop To New York Music Students
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - New York, New York
Target Corporation has awarded a $2,000 grant to Friends of the High School for Environmental Studies to bring Annie and Rex's Garbage Percussion Workshop to the Manhattan high school's music classes. Annie and Rex's Garbage Percussion Workshop is a fun, informative 35 minute session on music and the environment created by two New York musicians: Singer Songwriter Annie Dinerman, whose credits include the 2006 Abe Olman Award from Songwriters Hall of Fame and a 2007 Anna Sosenko Grant; and Percussionist Rex Benincasa, who teaches percussion workshops in the New York City libraries, and has performed with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Pilar Rioja and the Grammy Orchestra, the Sacramento Ballet, the Washington Ballet and the Merce Cunningham Dance Company.
The Garbage Percussion Workshop gives students an enjoyable, hands-on experience of the value of Repurposing. Benincasa teaches the fun of playing real percussion parts using items from the recycle bin: plastic bags, a pill bottle filled with pistachio shells, a pizza box, Snapple caps, tin cans, wire hangers, and glass and plastic bottles. Dinerman leads memorable, well-crafted songs about Repurposing and Recycling. A funny and fact-filled PowerPoint with animated graphics illustrates how students can feel good about being part of the solution. Dinerman and Benincasa first presented the Garbage Percussion Workshop at Dartmouth College in 2011 with guidance from the Public Domain Foundation, a project of Noel Paul Stookey (Paul of Peter, Paul and Mary) which supports music for positive social change.
Target Corporation awards $2,000 grants through its nationwide Arts, Culture + Design program to support arts and cultural events for students and families. Target Corporation, an American retailing company headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota, will award $1 billion in education grants by the end of 2015.
