Musicians' Union Frustrated With TV Network Negotiations
The American Federation of Musicians of the United States and Canada (AFM) ended the current round of bargaining with the major television networks yesterday with plenty of frustration and very little progress, according to AFM International President Ray Hair. The AFM's agreement for live and recorded TV was last concluded a decade ago and covers hundreds of musicians who perform in weekly variety shows like American Idol and Dancing with the Stars. The agreement also covers the house bands and guest artists appearing on popular late night programs like Late Show with David Letterman, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.
"We made a complete, comprehensive proposal this week in an effort to engage the networks in a constructive discussion, one that has been long overdue, about the issues that concern musicians who work in some of the most popular shows on television," said Hair. "Unfortunately, instead of a progressive attitude, we were met with demands for unjustified concessions that have upset our musicians."
The AFM's negotiating team includes rank and file representatives from New York, Nashville, Chicago, and Los Angeles. The negotiations toward a successor agreement opened on Tuesday at CBS headquarters in Manhattan. The discussions will continue at ABC Television in Burbank, California, on October 9.
