DiMA Joins Industry Partners And Stakeholders To Promote Internet Radio Growth And Innovation To Benefit Artists, Consumers And Recording Industry

The Digital Media Association joined with 977 Music, AccuRadio, Clear Channel, Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), Computer and Communications Industry Association (CCIA), Digitally Imported, Engine Advocacy, Pandora, Radio Paradise, Salem Broadcasting and the Small Webcaster Alliance (SWA) to launch the Internet Radio Fairness Coalition.

The coalition's mission is to urge Congress to support legislation (The Internet Radio Fairness Act of 2012, or IRFA), aimed at bringing the royalty system for Internet radio into the 21st century. Lee Knife, Executive Director of the Digital Media Association (DiMA) issued the following statement:

"As the leading trade organization representing digital media companies on copyright and royalty issues, DiMA is proud to join with our industry partners to launch the Internet Radio Fairness Coalition and lend pledge our support for the Internet Radio Fairness Act of 2012.

"We currently have a system that applies a unique rate-setting standard which forces internet radio to shoulder a larger royalty burden than other forms of digital radio. This is a clear case of an out-dated legal framework that stifles technology and consumer options. This bi-partisan solution will drive more innovation in the legal digital distribution of music. This will ultimately allow more choices for consumers and enable greater exposure for artists.

"New and emerging music platforms such as Internet Radio have revolutionized the way countless individuals enjoy music; and it is more important than ever that Congress update existing law to guarantee the continued development of these services. Applying the existing standard, which is already applied to all other statutory music licenses, is a key step towards achieving this objective."

"We applaud champions of the IRFA (H.R. 6480 and S.3609): Representatives Jason Chaffetz (R-UT), Jared Polis (D-CO), Darrell Issa (R-CA), and Zoe Lofgren (D-CA) in the House and Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) in the Senate and we look forward to working with Congress for timely hearings and passage of this important legislation."
