THE SONS Announce New Album, Give Away 'Good Karma' For $1
Money can’t buy love or happiness but starting the first of November it can buy good karma. U.K.-based indie quintet, The Sons, announced today the launch of a 60-day crowdfunding campaign via US-based platform, Kickstarter.com. Their goal is to raise $25,000 to fund the production, release and promotion of a new studio album.
In an email the band sent directly to their fanbase today, the band showcased a new campaign video, discussed the current state of the music industry, and welcomed fans to be a part of their music-making story:
“As you may/may not have heard, the music industry has changed beyond recognition over the past few years, and many people think it’s all doom and gloom for bands at the moment. But the truth is that to a large extent, the power is being handed back to the artist themselves, with a number of opportunities presenting themselves in this technological age that just didn’t exist before. Indie is Indie again!
And as they say, as one door closes……
Well, here we are knocking on YOUR door asking YOU to be a part of our story.”
This message to fans reflects the warm, optimistic sentiment of their entire campaign, whose tagline is “The Sons – the best is yet to come. Be a part of it.”
As a customary part of the Kickstarter platform, The Sons’ campaign offers fun, enticing giveaways to people who invest in it. Like most bands, The Sons will offer the compulsory pre-release copy of the album, various compilations of their back music and video catalogues, as well as assorted memorabilia. But this campaign has a few tricks up its sleeve…some of which have yet to be revealed. To give a taste of things to come, The Sons have unveiled an offer to host a dinner party for one fan plus 6 of their friends. This isn’t just a stack of pizzas and a case of beer. The Sons’ guitarist/vocalist, Stewart English, is also a gourmet chef and has created three distinct, tantalizing menus to entice Derby-based investors. But wait! There's more. To make the offer complete, The Sons will do all of the washing up!
To further showcase their fan-centric theme, another of the giveaways the band is offering is membership to The Sons Official Fanclub. Due to officially launch with the release of the new album, fans who buy into the fanclub option will form an exclusive group of Charter Members. Once the Kickstarter campaign ends, the fanclub will not accept additional members until Fall 2013. Beyond receiving the privileges of Charter Membership, people who buy into the fanclub option will also receive a signed copy of the new CD, a band t-shirt, a digital documentary of the making of the album, and, as a special ‘thank you’, will have their names listed in the albums’ liner notes.
For anyone who would like to support the campaign but cannot afford it or doesn’t feel compelled to invest a larger amount, the band has included a giveaway priced at one dollar. When someone invests at the $1 level, the band promises to send that person “good karma”. The Sons’ front man, Paul Herron, explains why the band decided to offer this option - “Each of us has been in a position where we’ve wanted to show our support but couldn’t spare the money. We understand how that is. Bearing this in mind, we decided ‘Right! Let’s put this out there so people may just chuck us a dollar.’ If we reach our goal on nothing but $1 investments – just means we have 25,000 fans and that’d be mint!”.
To promote the campaign, The Sons have lined up another tour of continental Europe. In addition, brothers Paul and Steven Herron are hosting a mini acoustic tour of Southern California.
