Mark Fried Joins NMPA Board
The National Music Publishers' Association (NMPA) today announced that Mark Fried, founder and president of Spirit Music, has been appointed to the organization's Board of Directors, effective immediately. He was elected at NMPA's recent board meeting in Los Angeles.
"The music industry – particularly those behind the creation of music – benefits from leadership of individuals such as Mark," said Irwin Z. Robinson, chairman of the NMPA Board. "The NMPA Board shares a strong commitment to not only protecting but furthering the success of songwriters and music publishers."
"The importance of copyright and royalty rates to songwriters and music publishers cannot be overstated," said David Israelite, president and CEO of the NMPA. "Having Mark's experience will be tremendously helpful as our industry fights to ensure fairness on those issues in the regulatory, legislative and legal arenas. I cannot thank the members of the Board enough for their service."
Fried founded independent publishing company Sprit Music in 1995 and since that time has expanded the boundaries of traditional music publishing pairing aggressive royalty collection with strategic song and career promotion. Spirit's rich and diverse roster includes works by The Who, The Velvet Underground, Chaka Khan, Charles Mingus, Alan and Marilyn Bergman, Scissor Sisters and The Naked and Famous. Before founding Spirit, Fried spent a decade working as an executive in Writer/Publisher Relations at BMI, working with thousands of songwriters and presiding over a repertoire of two million songs. He began his career helping launch Spin Magazine and cultivating its dedicated readership.
