Composer Woody Pak's New Work, "The Four Seasons," Showcases Korean And Western Instruments

"The Four Seasons," the title of a new original composition by Woody Pak (http://www.woodypak.com) and (http://www.chaostheorymusic.net), is at once an homage to the distinct features of Korea's four seasons as well as a celebration of the traditional sounds and rhythms of its musical herita ge. Pak has seamlessly brought together disparate musical elements to create a dynamic, exciting sonic experience that features the virtuoso haegum (Korean fiddle) player Kang, Eunil and her talented ensemble, Haegumplus. The piece will make its world premiere performance on Friday, November 30, 2012, 7:30pm at the National Gugak Theater, Seoul Korea. (See attached flyer and for tickets go to: www.gugakmall.kr)

"When one discovers a new place or culture it is never alone," says composer Woody Pak. "I have had the privilege of having talented collaborators who have stretched their own musical experiences as Korean musicians to accommodate my unusual vision and musical impulses. The wonderful collision of our differences and similarities have made it a rich experience for all of us."

The composition presents Korea's four seasons from an "outsider looking in" perspective, focusing on the sounds, impressions and feelings evoked by the natural beauty and majesty of Korea's environment and people. The piece epitomizes the journey of the "foreigner" undergoing the universal experience of the four seasons in a place that is both foreign yet intimately familiar to Woody. This journey of the seasons, with its accompanying joy, tragedy, and spiritual connection, is not only Woody's personal journey of self-identity and awareness as a Korean-American, but a familiar journey toward connecting to a uniquely Korean experience of nature and the elements. Haegumplus is an ensemble especially equipped to take on music that is both Korea-centric as well as globally appealing. With it's mixture of Korean traditional instruments and western instruments, "The Four Seasons," performed by Kang, Eunil and Haegumplus, achieves an inspirational musical balance that clearly identifies itself as Korean while being understood worldwide.
