Oakland Songwriter Pete Ahonen Releases Debut CD ‘In The Blood' On Lost Monkey Records
Oakland songwriter Pete Ahonen is proud to announce the release of his debut album, “In the Blood” (Lost Monkey Records). Featuring nine original acoustic songs, the recording showcases Ahonen’s ability to paint vivid pictures of characters wresting with faith, love and the law, in words and music. Combining the sensibility of Townes Van Zandt with Shane McGowan’s authenticity, Ahonen sings in a rough-edged voice that suggests long dusty roads, cigarettes and late nights on the outskirts of town. Accompanied by bassist Andrew Gibson, and occasionally swapping his guitar out for a banjo, Ahonen’s songs are in turns moody, hopeful and filled with caution. Growing up in the East Bay not far from where he now lives, Ahonen’s mother gave him a guitar when he was 10 and he immediately took to the instrument. As he wrote short stories in tandem with his guitar studies, he fell in love with songwriting. Inspired by hearing Jimmie Hendrix for the first time, Ahonen realized his own unique voice had a place and soon began to write songs in earnest. Now known for his energetic and engaging live show, Ahonen’s performances soon caught the ear of local audiences as well as that of the Lost Monkey Records label. The Hayward-based label signed Ahonen in 2011as its first artist with an eye toward bringing Ahonen’s voice to a larger audience. The release of “In the Blood” follows on the heels of Ahonen being tapped to write a song for the Music for Pixels Charity EP project in effort to raise awareness and end violence against women.
