WXPN Launches New 'Singer-Songwriter Radio' Stream

WXPN (xpn.org), the nationally-recognized leader in Triple A (Adult Album Alternative) music and noncommercial radio service of the University of Pennsylvania, announced its new, online music stream, XPN2 Singer-Songwriter Radio, that is devoted to artists whose music is rooted in the singer-songwriter tradition. The new stream, also broadcast on HD2 at 88.5-2, launched.

Singer-Songwriter Radio showcases music by both heritage and new artists – encompassing both troubadours and bands influenced by the singer-songwriter tradition - and features exclusive in-studio performances with many of them. The new stream is hosted by current, familiar WXPN DJs, including Michaela Majoun, Helen Leicht, Dan Reed and David Dye.

According to Bruce Warren, Assistant General Manager for Programming, creation of the new Singer-Songwriter Radio format was informed by WXPN members and listeners, and the emergence of many exciting new artists who exemplify or are stretching the singer-songwriter label and traditions. These include the Avett Brothers, Ray Lamontagne, Mumford and Sons, Michael Kiwanuka and The Civil Wars.

Singer-Songwriter Radio is also where several outstanding music programs can be heard, including an additional broadcast of XPN's award-winning, nationally syndicated World Cafe (weeknights from 7pm to 9pm), the syndicated Mountain Stage radio program (Saturdays at 11 am), and Folkadelphia, hosted by Fred Knittel (Sunday 3-5pm, re-broadcast Monday 9-11pm). Sunday afternoons will feature a four hour block of Folk Alley, WKSU's folk music service, from 12-4 pm, produced and hosted in part by legendary XPN folk music radio host Gene Shay.

"Our mission at WXPN is to connect artists with audiences," Warren said, "and our listeners really respond to this rich field of artists that spans several decades and genres. From Jackson Browne and Joni Mitchell to Bright Eyes and David Wax Museum, and Steve Earle and Emmylou Harris to Ryan Adams and Lianne La Havas, there is quite a bit of variety and plenty for listeners to discover and enjoy."
