COSON Does It Again As Full Music Copyright Licensing Of Hotels Begins Around The Country
Under the agreement, effective January 1, 2013, a discounted copyright royalty rate will be applicable to all hotel rooms, attached restaurants and events venues owned by registered hotels in Nigeria. The deal negotiated over a period of more than two years between COSON and Hotel & Personal Services Employers Association (HOPESEA) and Hotel Owners Forum Abuja (HOFA) ends the rancour associated with copyright royalty payment by hotels in Nigeria. It also ends the prevalent fear of multi-million naira copyright litigation hanging over most of the hotels. COSON General Manager, Mr Chinedu Chukwuji says, 'Since the agreement was signed in December, we have had a retreat with our licensing officers and consultants to ensure seamless and professional implementation. The rates are very clear and there are no arguments any more. In deference to the DG of the NTDC and the future of the hotel industry in Nigeria, we had to make significant concessions. Now that implementation has started, we expect full co-operation from the hotels across the country. I must however point out that the discounted royalty rates will apply only to hotels that are registered with NTDC and are members of HOPESEA or HOFA. I am afraid that any hotels not so registered or not belonging to the membership of these key organizations will have to pay the normal rates' Reacting to the development, Mr Efe Omorogbe, CEO of Nowmuzik which manages frontline artistes like Tuface Idibia, Sunny Neji, Timi Dakolo and many more said, 'many were sure that this day would never come but here we are finally doing things the way they are done in every civilized nation. I salute the vision and uncommon leadership of the COSON Chairman, Chief Tony Okoroji, whose tenacity has shown that good things can happen in Nigeria' Also reacting, Hon. John Ewelukwa Udegbunam, National President of Music Label Owners & Recording Industries Association of Nigeria (MORAN) said, 'These developments are marvellous in our sight. The members of MORAN are very proud of the tremendous progress COSON continues to make. Let the music pay!'
