Folk Pop Band SHEL Among First In U.S. To Use DPA’s New D:facto™ II Vocal Mic

Emerging group performs at the 2013 NAMM Show to illustrate the benefits of the company’s new Vocal Microphone

ANAHEIM, JANUARY 24, 2013 – The folk pop band SHEL, longtime supporters of DPA Microphones, has become one of the first group of artists in the U.S. to use the company’s new d:facto™ II Vocal Microphone. The group recently took the microphone on the road for performances in Denver and Salt Lake City. Included on this tour is a final stop in Anaheim, where SHEL will perform during the 2013 NAMM Show at DPA Microphones’ booth (# 6996) throughout the entire event. Their headline performance will take place on Thursday, January 24 at 4 p.m.

“We tested the new d:facto II at home before we hit the road and absolutely loved it,” says Hannah Holbrook, who sings and plays keyboard for the band. “Having now had the chance to use it a couple times, we found the microphone to be very crisp and clear. It makes our vocals sound more natural and allows for our voices to be heard above the instruments, which is always important.”

Already fans of DPA’s d:vote™ 4099 Instrument Mics, which the sisters use on their violin and djembe drums, the band was familiar with the quality sound for which DPA Microphones is known. The new d:facto lived up to their expectations, bringing all the clarity of DPA to their vocals. Those following the group are even taking notice of the increased clarity of their vocals.

“We all keep using the word ‘pristine’ to describe the sound,” continues Holbrook. “At our stop in Denver, one of our fans who attends almost all of our shows told us that it was the best we ever sounded. I think the d:facto really helped bring our performance to the next level. We are all very pleased with these new microphones.”

Capturing a true studio sound for the live stage, the d:facto II is the latest addition to DPA’s d:facto line. It offers an extraordinarily natural sound with high separation and extreme SPL handling, giving users unlimited possibilities for their performances. The d:facto II also provides improved audio performance, as it is superbly linear in frequency and phase, both on- and off-axis, while its impressive definition and accuracy reproduces a singer’s voice effortlessly. In addition to use with the new wired DPA handle, the d:facto II provides singers and engineers with the added benefit of a state-of-the-art adapter system. This allows for seamless integration with many professional wireless systems, including Sony, Lectrosonics, Shure, Wisycom and Sennheiser.
SHEL is comprised of four sisters, Sarah, Hannah, Eva and Liza Holbrook. Classically trained musicians hailing from the artistic community of Fort Collins, Colorado, SHEL blends classical music with pop elements for an eccentric sound that is youthful and upbeat, yet highly emotive. The Holbrook sisters grew up in a musical household and first appeared on stage as backup musicians for their singer-songwriter father, Andrew Holbrook. Their latest EP, When the Dragon Came Down, was co-produced by six-time Grammy Award winner, Brent Maher. The band has attracted the attention of such major media outlets as NPR and ABC, and has toured nationwide, playing fairs and festivals, including SXSW, International Folk Alliance, Lilith Fair, Four Corners Folk Festival and Cornerstone.
SHEL’s latest stop in Anaheim will put its members’ talents on full display for the four days of the 2013 NAMM Show. In addition to hearing full performances, attendees will have the unique opportunity to hear the different mics being employed in SHEL’s setup at personal listening stations located in the DPA Microphones booth.
“We are really excited about performing at NAMM,” concludes Holbrook. “I think it is really cool how the d:facto and d:vote microphones will be running audio to personal mixers for guests to listen to our music at personal listening stations. I love the idea of being able to listen to each different type of microphone and hear how good the audio sounds.”
