GRL Talk Book Launchs At Book Woman On 2/13
Website: http://www.grltalkbook.com/ February 5, 2013 - AUSTIN, TX – Musicians for Equal Opportunities for Women (aka MEOW) has announced publication of its first book: GRL Talk: 231 Memorable Quotes from ROCKRGRL Magazine. To celebrate, a reading and book launch will be held at Book Woman, the only feminist book store in Texas, on Wednesday, February 13th, 2013, at 7:00 PM. This reading is free and open to the public. ROCKRGRL Magazine founder/publisher/editor-in-chief Carla DeSantis Black will read some of her favorite quotes from the book (which was completely funded through a successful Kickstarter campaign in September) and share stories about the evolution and demise of the first national independent magazine for and about women in music. “ROCKRGRL was way ahead of the curve,” says Black. “Before social media, many female artists were isolated. There was no way to connect with like-minded musicians outside their geographic area. ROCKRGRL was unique in that it built a strong sense of community before the Internet age. It brought real change to the music industry.” Shaped and designed to resemble a CD, GRL Talk features some of the best and most memorable quotes from the highly influential and much-missed ROCKRGRL Magazine, which published 57 issues between 1995 and 2005. ROCKRGRL’s archives were acquired by Schlesinger Library’s Radcliffe Institute at Harvard in 2008 as part of their collection on American Women’s History. Nearly 160 artists, known and not-so-known, are quoted in GRL Talk including: Carrie Brownstein, Neko Case, Rosanne Cash, Judy Collins, Ani DiFranco, Beth Ditto, Melissa Etheridge, Rosie Flores, Patty Griffin, Kathleen Hanna, Chrissie Hynde, Joan Jett, Sharon Jones, Lisa Loeb, Courtney Love, Amy Mann, Bibi McGill, June Millington, Yoko Ono, Beth Orton, Regina Spektor, Suzi Quatro, Ann Wilson and many more. GRL Talk’s foreword was penned by Gillian G. Gaar, author of “She’s A Rebel,” the first book on women in rock. Book Woman is located at 5501 N. Lamar Blvd., #A-105, Austin, Texas. For a complete list of GRL Talk artists (and to order a copy) visit the official site at www.grltalkbook.com.
