The M Bomb Has Landed - Interview
Higher feat. K-Chan & Mistah Nerf ( Off the M-Bomb Has Landed EP) INTERVIEW So Mistah Nerf and K-Chan, If you don’t mind me asking, what are your real names? MN: My real name’s Dimas Johan Xanthus Ong. Most of my friends call me Deej or just Dimas. [:)] KC: Mine's Kristine Chan, but everyone else calls me Tin or Tin-Tin. (chuckles). MN: (smiles) Yeah, it's a local thing. We shorten our names a lot. I see, and what do you two do for a living? ![]() MN: I’m a full time freelance copywriter and article editor. I usually spend the entire morning writing up posts for article directories under online marketing clients. It’s a mentally daunting job but it sure does help pay the bills. KC: I manage the sales and marketing department for one of the major hotels in Iloilo City, Amigo Terrace Hotel. However, I also do some theater and music. When did you two begin in the music business? MN: My mom and dad discovered that I had a penchant for singing, and had me perform for school events back when I was in my elementary years. Eventually, I learned to play the piano (although not masterfully, just enough to get the melodies of songs without reading notes and chords). My first exposure to performing arts came in the form of theater, where I was part of Cultural Club of Iloilo, a theatrical arts group under Saint Paul University – Iloilo. It eventually turned private and became its own entity, now called Iloilo Prima Galaw Incorporated (IPG). KC: I was already pretty much into music as far as I can remember, though it wasn't until joining IPG that I really got to explore other forms of performing arts. So, how did you two end up meeting? And what made you decide to work together? MN: We were both part of the Cultural Club. I guess we were both already into the whole performing thing, huh, Tin? KC: Yeah, we knew each other way back during our college days, got to perform alongside each other on several occasions, whether it was a theatrical production or during special occasions like weddings, social gatherings and stuff. NerF here was looking for a vocalist to sing his track, "Higher", and I just happen to be available a whole lot. The rest is history, I guess. MN: I’ve always been dabbling in electronic music during my spare time, but I never really pushed it all the way like this. I've done some arrangements for our previous stage productions, but electro house and dubstep came late into my life. It’s really overwhelming, to be honest. You two are releasing a single on High Frequency Records. Is this your first release? MN: This is actually my 3rd release under the label. I’ve had my remix of Linkin Park’s Bleed It Out released on the 10th of May, thanks to the label owner’s (William Buchanan aka YEGDJ) much appreciated help, along with the bonus track “Come My Way” which featured Ishmael Johnson on vocals. As for K-Chan and me working on our first track, this is actually the second time we collaborated with each other… KC: We had our first dubstep collaboration on a track called, "All Night." He's got it on his Facebook account. MN: Thanks for the shameless plug. KC: Anytime (grins). MN: It was something that sampled Lionel Richie's chorus hook for "All Night Long", mostly with lyrics that I wrote up for her to sing ,with me doing a bit of backing vocals. KC: Home equipment was used for that one though, with NerF providing the microphone, which he claims was just made for web conference calls. MN: Yeah, resourcefulness. Had to start somewhere (chuckling). KC: It wasn't until "Higher" that we decided to professionally record a track at Thinklogic, which is one of many recording studios in the city. So what is this single all about? And what do you want the listeners to get from it? MN: I would classify this track as part of the dubstep genre. It’s an original composition that I wrote down and decided to get KC to sing along to the melody. Context-wise, it’s essentially about how a woman can dominate any man she wants, to be able to get him to experience satisfaction that is unlike anything he’s ever experienced. It’s technically baby making music when you think about it in a deeper context, seen through the eyes of a woman. Of course, there are the obligatory wobbles and synths to add a lot of “oomph” to it. KC: I agree with that. Women are rather sensual and provocative creatures, though considered less forward about it, and in this day and age, speaking one's mind about sex without being too explicit about it, in my opinion, makes it even more appealing. I don't know about you, but having MistahNerF here write the lyrics just makes it all the better for me. MN: Well, I have been in the company of women for quite a long time, though it's not anything of a sexual nature. I have a lot of female chums and buddies both online and offline, with KC here being one of them. Where can we buy the single when it releases? MN: We are quite hopeful that it will be released by July. We (myself, KC and the label) are hoping to get it in as many digital music download stores worldwide, such as iTunes, Juno Download, Audio Jelly and many more. Thank you for your time, Is there anything else that you want to tell the world? KC: I've got MistahNerF here to overwhelm me with all of this, to be honest. I didn't really expect this to be publicly released all over the world, so I'm still pretty much in shock. Apart from that, though, I'd like to thank him for this opportunity. Filipinos are mainly known for rendering pop, alternative and love songs, but I think it's a breath of fresh air that we're finally given a chance to venture into the world of electronic music. I'd also like to thank Beats4DJS for taking the time for this interview. MN: Thank you very much as well… As for final words, get ready for the Ilonggo people to drop it as hard as any other ethnicity with a huge affinity for EDM. With this being a prime (and most likely, first ever) example of "Dubstep Lokal" (local dubstep) to be released internationally, we’re hoping to get electronic music recognized as much as any other type of original Pilipino music (OPM). This is as groundbreaking for us as it can possibly get, and a huge opportunity to show the world what we’re capable of, all thanks to High Frequency Records a subdivision of Beats4DJs!
