The Music Producers Guild And PPL Help Studio Producers Access Their PPL Royalties

The Music Producers Guild, in conjunction with music licensing company PPL, is presenting a special panel on March 4, 2013 to help studio music producers understand how PPL collection and payment works – and how to claim any royalties they are owed.

PPL licenses recorded music played in public or broadcast on the radio or TV and then distributes the fees to its performer and record company members. In 2011, PPL turned over £153.5m in license fees and distributed £130.8m back to its members.

In recent months the Music Producers Guild has worked closely with PPL to launch the Eligible Studio Producers Form, a new mechanism designed to provide evidence of a studio producer’s performance at the time of recording. The form, which was launched in July 2012, allows all parties to agree, at the point of recording, what contributions have been made on a track. This simple form opens the door for producers to make royalty claims by providing an elegant and transparent process that clarifies future payments.

Steve Levine, chairman of the Music Producers Guild, says: “As this income is an important revenue stream for recording musicians, record companies and producers, we want to ensure that our members understand the process so that they don’t lose out on any potential income they are owed. We hope that this seminar will answer many of their queries and give them the confidence to make claims for payments using the new Eligible Studio Producers Form.”

The MPG/PPL seminar will consist of a panel of experts who will give an overview of what PPL does and explain in detail how the new Eligible Studio Producers Form works, how to fill it in and how to claim royalties.
The panel will consists of Camilla Waite, (PPL Head of Legal & Business Affairs), Penny White (PPL Head of Members Services) and MPG‘s Tommy D (producer, artist, label owner, who has worked with artists such as Catatonia, Beyonce, Jay-Z and KT Tunstall).

Afterwards, members of PPL‘s member services team will be on hand with WI-Fi enabled laptops to give advice on any PPL related queries.

The event will take place at 7pm on March 4th at the Hospital Club, 24 Endell Street, London WC2H 9HQ. As space will be limited, anyone wishing to attend should book in advance at: http://www.mpg.org.uk/events/223.
