Leading Guitar Journalists Launch Pure Guitar Magazine: Blending In-Depth Journalism With Internet & Mobile App Technology
Founded in September 2012, Pure Guitar (www.pureguitar.com) is a new breed of guitar magazine that blends literate, in-depth journalism with Internet and mobile app technology. Showcasing intelligent, insightful writing by leading guitar journalists, Pure Guitar features in-depth, uncut interviews in text, audio, and video formats, as well as feature articles, lessons, reviews, and gear coverage. Offered exclusively online, it’s published 6-8 times annually. Longtime followers of guitar magazines will recognize several names from Pure Guitar’s unsurpassed core editorial group: Jas Obrecht, Tom Wheeler, Tom Mulhern, Jon Sievert, and Joe Gore were all staff editors during the so-called the “golden era” of Guitar Player and have well over a century of experience as front-line guitar journalists. Ritchie Fliegler is the former Senior VP of Fender and a renowned expert on guitars and amplifiers, and Tim Pierce is Los Angeles’ leading studio guitarist. “Pure Guitar focuses on bringing the best-possible guitar content to our readers,” says Editor in Chief Jas Obrecht. “Without the space limitations of paper magazines, we can utilize all of the current online technology to deliver more substantial interviews, articles, lessons, and reviews. We strive to keep the guitarist front and center, and to deliver excellence and integrity at every turn. Our audience is guitarists. When they’re not playing guitar, they’re thinking about guitar. They want to be better players. They want to know more about their instrument and its history. They want to make better-informed choices about the gear they purchase. Regardless of musical style or taste, they want to know about the best players, the best techniques, the best equipment. To Pure Guitar’s audience, the guitar isn’t just a desire or even an obsession. It’s a quest.” In upcoming issues, Pure Guitar will cover provocative, inspiring guitarists in all genres, from legendary players to emerging artists. It will bring lessons and insights from highly accomplished teachers and artists; guitar lore not only from respected historians but also from the players, designers, and manufacturers who made history; career tips; gear reviews; and much more. And whether it’s text, audio, video, photo essays, or a blend, Pure Guitar is designed to provide the optimum guitar experience. Magazine co-founder Ryan Rhea and partner Claudia Rhea have harnessed cutting-edge technologies that make Pure Guitar’s combo of audio, video, text, and links as effective and enriching as possible, both online and in an upcoming app. Issue #1 offered a comprehensive 12,000-word Eric Johnson interview—complete with extensive audio and video with Eric as he spoke about inspiration, creativity, spirituality and music, and how to make a Stratocaster – and its owner – play at their very best. Other content includes historic pieces on Bob Dylan and bluesman Son House, a very rare Jason Becker audio interview, a Jerry Garcia “behind the scenes” photo gallery, a Wes Montgomery video lesson, instructional video of how to layer guitar parts for a song, gear coverage, extensive music reviews and more. Pure Guitar’s second online outing brings forth a stellar roster of voices, old and new. In addition to the cover feature on composer/guitar maven Gretchen Menn, the issue’s editorial spotlights a few single-moniker icons including Fender (the man), Hendrix and SRV. There are also video lessons on country blues with Stefan Grossman, jazz guitar listening essentials, and much more. “In short, this ain’t your dad’s old music magazine,” says Jas Obrecht. “Then again, perhaps in a way it is. From the start, we’ve imagined Pure Guitar as part Smithsonian, part old-school guitar magazine, part music channel, and a fun place to hang out.” ###
