6 April 2013 (San Francisco, CA) -
On Sunday 14 April from 5pm to 9pm on the second floor South wing of the Veterans War Memorial Building 401 Van Ness, will be heard 'An Afternoon (and Evening) of Delights'. Sounds Classical ... NOT! This musical fare will be two versions of aural elegance with the afternoon set, Jazz with North Bay's, Marcia Miget and a Latin set in the evening featuring Wayne Wallace.
Leading the Quartet is multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer and educator Marcia Migét. Marcia’s performance pedigree includes appearances with 'Legends' from every idiom, e.g. Freddie Redd, Larry Ridley, Buddy Baker, Kenny Barron, Frank Foster, Pete Escovedo, Donald Byrd, Lenny Williams of Tower Power, Tyrone Hill of Sun Ra’s Arkestra, Carlos Santana, The Voices of Latin Rock, Garth Webber, Anthony Brown and the Asian American Orchestra, Karl Perazzo, Wayne Wallace’s Rhythm and Rhyme, John Santos, Dartanyan Brown, Babatunde Lea, David Hardiman, Larry Vann, Abel Sanchez with Jorge Santana and the SF Kids, and son, Jaimeo Brown. In 2009, Ms. Miget was selected to arrange Coltrane's 'After the Rain' for Dr. Anthony Brown for several Coltrane Tribute performances. She recorded on Song for Cesar: Live in Phoenix with the Voices of Latin Rock, she currently performs with Lester Chambers (of the legendary Chambers Brothers) and the Mud Stompers. Part of a family musical heritage, Marcia along with her parents and sisters toured the Midwest from the age of 10 playing Jazz , Gospel and Blues. Ms. Miget is featured on her son, each coast drummer Jaimeo Brown’s April 15th released CD, 'Transcendence' along with her daughter, Marisha and grand daughter Selah. Artistic Director of Marin's Miraflores Academie the ex-NEA Artist-in-Education has taught and mentored numerous youth who have pursued and currently have music careers.
Bringing his rhythmically buoyant, emotionally uplifting style to the stage bassist Ron Belcher travels the world and throughout the United States performing or recording with such international stars as Branford Marsalis, Regina Carter, Rodney Franklin, John Handy, Pete Escovedo, as well as a literal “Who’s Who” of the San Francisco jazz scene. Ron has garnered a reputation as one of northern California’s first-call Jazz bassists. A passionate teacher and advocate for children’s education, and member of the East Texas All-Stars, Ron has served on the faculty of the University of California, Berkeley, Young Musicians’ Program, and has contributed to several seasons for the San Francisco Symphony’s Adventures In Music outreach program.
A Bernard Purdie protégé from Harlem, performer/educator Sly Randolph has been playing and teaching drumming for five decades. His percussion facility spans the gamut from drum corps to funk. He's performed with Lavay Smith, Ed Kelly, Robert Stewart, Rhonda Benin, Glen Pearson, Ron Belcher, Warren Gale, Khalil Shaheed, and Joe Warner, among many others.
Calvin Keys has graced the stage with Donald Byrd, Ahmad Jamal, Charles Earland, Lou Donaldson, Bobby Hutcherson, Joe Henderson, Carmen McCrea, Gloria Lynn, Jackie Ivory, Jackie Davis, Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw, Eddie Henderson, Stanley Turrentine, Jimmy Smith, Jimmy McGriff, Jack McDuff, Dr. Lonnie Smith and Papa De Francesco,
George Coleman, Jimmy Witherspoon to name a few.
“It's really wonderful to be able to give something back to our Veterans.”, says Ms.
Miget whose recently deceased Father a World War II Navy Vet, “They put their lives and the sustainability of their families on the line for our Country, it's the least we can do to support them when they return home.”
Established by the American Legion in August 2011 the Veterans Success Center, located in the Veterans War Memorial Building, exists to assist veterans with all the resources needed for their transition back to civilian life. Serving Veterans of all Eras the VSC, the largest job search and placement facility in the the Bay, provides vocational training, placement and transitional housing as well as business and creative opportunities for our Veterans Community. Partially funded by Craigslist and CraigConnects Founder, Craig Newmark, additional funding is needed to defray the costs of maintaining the equipment and other office services Vets need. While the Executive Director and other managers of the VSC are veterans and volunteers, it is veterans who are employed to assist in the daily-to-day management. Fund raising is critical to the ongoing and successful operation of the VSC. This joint project of American Legion District 8, the VFW, and AmVets is in partnership with the San Francisco County Veterans Service Organization, the California State Employment Development Department, and the Veterans Administration Training Center.
This Benefit is one in an ongoing revenue generation process to support the VSC. The end goals are twofold, 1) to raise funds for programs and projects focused on funding the Veterans Success Center in San Francisco, and 2) to attract more Veterans of all Eras, primarily those under 35, to utilize the services provided.
Tickets for the event are $15 with a VetsFriend coupon and $25 at the door. All donations are tax deductible with checks to be made out to: American Legion 8th District Council, a 501C(19) veterans service organizations.
