National Poll From Rakuten's Play.com Reveals Queen Really Are The Champions

A poll by Rakuten's Play.com of over 20,000 music fans has revealed that the nation's top artist of all time is Queen, closely followed by The Beatles and the Foo Fighters. The poll also revealed that the UK's favourite music genre is Rock, with two-fifths (40.51%) of Brits preferring Rock Music above all other styles.

Men Rock while Women are Top of the Pops
While Queen topped the charts for both sexes, when it came to the musical gender divide, women were twice as likely as men to list Pop as their favourite style of music.

Survey insights revealed that Grammy Award winning Adele was second in line for the female vote and the top ten artists of all time for women include the likes of P!nk (5th), Bon Jovi (6th) and Abba (10th). This pop preference was highlighted by Iron Maiden's position in the female chart, while this heavy rock band may have charted 7th overall, they gleaned just 0.62% of the female vote.

Meanwhile in the men's top ten, rock and metal dominated over pop as preferred music genres. Despite ranking in 10th place overall, the reputed King of Pop, Michael Jackson, only made it to the 16th spot for male voters, with classic rock bands such as Iron Maiden (4th), AC/DC (7th) and Pink Floyd (10th).

The decline of hip-hop
Interestingly, despite the celebrity status of stars like Jay-Z and Kanye West, the poll suggests hip-hop is one of the least popular music genres with just 3.75% of the public vote. Jay-Z himself only gained 0.18% of the vote, and best friend Kanye just 0.11%. Opera & Classical fared even worse than hip-hop, gaining just 0.39% of the public vote, with the most popular classical artist being Katharine Jenkins with 0.04% of the vote.

Physical music sales
Adam Stewart, Marketing Director, Rakuten's Play.com, commented on the poll: "Despite an increasing focus on digital music, physical music sales still accounted for £540 million in 2012, 59% of the total music sales market. Customers at Rakuten's Play.com are some of the most passionate music fans in the UK, and our sales data shows that despite the ease of digital sales, there is still a proportion of people still wanting own physical copies of their favourite music. We are seeing resurgence in popularity of classic, iconic bands, and this national poll that puts Queen, The Beatles, David Bowie and Led Zeppelin in the top ten just further reiterates this point."
