EMusic Launches New Editorial Experience To Celebrate The Year In Music 2013

Bookmark and Share

eMusic has announced the release of The Year in Music 2013, an immersive digital experience that takes users on a curated journey through the musical acts that have defined the past 12 months and offers a tantalizing view into the artists that will be shaping the industry in 2014. The Year in Music combines an interactive HTML5 website with a native iOS app to provide a rich, transmedia experience for independently minded music lovers that blends original editorial, audio and stunning visuals.

"We're confident that this year's list of Next Big Things will be just as strong, and that our pick for 2013's Album of the Year captures that renegade artistic spirit we've long valued."

eMusic has always believed in the power of people over algorithms, and The Year in Music 2013 is the culmination of 12 months of the eMusic editorial staff rabidly surveying every corner of the music industry. In addition to an exhaustive list of the 100 Best Albums of 2013, eMusic's coverage is rounded out with a wealth of interviews with 2013's notable artists and insightful essays from well-respected music critics.

"This unique experience, combined with our distinctive editorial voice, sets us apart. One of the things I'm proudest of has been eMusic's consistent early championing of young, boundary-pushing artists. If you look back at our 13 to Watch in 2013, a list we assembled last December, you'll find names like Sky Ferreira, Savages, Icona Pop and Parquet Courts, all of whom ended up having a great year in 2013," said J. Edward Keyes, eMusic Editor-in-Chief. "We're confident that this year's list of Next Big Things will be just as strong, and that our pick for 2013's Album of the Year captures that renegade artistic spirit we've long valued."

The Knife's "Shaking the Habitual" has been named the top album of the year, and within the experience, there are exclusive behind-the-scenes photos from The Knife's "Shaking the Habitual" tour as well as animated versions of the cartoons on the album cover.

Beyond eMusic's list of the 100 Best Albums of 2013, editorial sections within the new experience include:

Hidden Gems, a dozen albums from 2013 we feel were unfairly ignored by the hype cycle.
Giant Leaps, interviews with artists who had significant artistic breakthroughs in 2013.
Trendspotting, five essays by well-known music critics that showcase new music trends to inspire and enlighten.
Next Big Things, highlighting the artists to watch into 2014.
J. Edward Keyes, eMusic's Editor-in-Chief who has been writing about music since 1997, oversaw and contributed to the piece with eMusic editors, Jayson Greene and Laura Leebove. Renowned music writers, including Chuck Eddy and Maura Johnston, also contributed original essays.
