Chicago, IL - February 4, 2014. Many of the great rhythm and blues clubs on the Southside of Chicago are a thing of the past, but there are still a few places that feature true “soul” music. And you might think that it is a long way from the streets of Chicago to the flamenco clubs and peñas in the winding streets of Sevilla or Jerez, Spain. But it turns out that these places have some things in common. These are establishments where true aficionados come to appreciate the local art form and all of its rich traditions. People also come to have fun and there is usually an “overly dramatic” MC to announce the performers. Finally, and most importantly, in both places, it’s really all about the singers (or in flamenco, the “cantaores”) telling a story with emotion, vibrato, skillful phrasing and, at times, pure abandon. The expressiveness present in American soul music and Spanish flamenco singing is undeniable.

Otis Redding was often called the “King of Soul.” The story of Otis Redding began on September 9th, 1941 when he was born in Dawson, Georgia. Between then and the time of his tragic death, just 26 years later, Redding wrote some of the most memorable and enduring Soul/R&B songs ever recorded.

King of Soul’s talented ensemble of seasoned professionals presents some of his amazing catalog with a Spanish guitar accompaniment and new arrangements featuring the rhythms of Andalusia. The group features “The Soulkeeper” Gerald McClendon (vocals), core members of Las Guitarras de España Carlo Basile (Spanish guitar), Bob Garrett (caja, percussion), Greg Nergaard (acoustic bass) and Chihsuan Yang (violin) from Corky Siegal’s Chamber Blues. Additionally, performances typically include well-known guest artists from the flamenco, world music, and blues scenes.

King of Soul-Acoustic Otis Redding will perform as part of the Chicago Flamenco Festival at City Winery Chicago, 1200 W. Randolph Street, on Monday, March 3. Doors Open at 6PM and The Spanish Guitar Duo, featuring Diego Alonso and Carlo Basile (along with special guests), will open the show at 7:30PM. Ticket prices range from $18 to $22.
