The Post Mortems Release Debut Novella Album 'Cracked And Crooked'

DAVENPORT, Iowa — Seminal eastern Iowa bass and drums dark-rockers The Post Mortems celebrate the release of their mercurial debut studio album “Cracked and Crooked” with a live performance at RIBCO Friday, March 7 at 9:30 p.m., with supporting performances by Gentle Edward Records labelmates, Rock Island’s eclectic alterna-wavers Satellite Heart, and comrades in arms, Chicago’s princes of Waitsian parlor jazz, Mutts. The spectacle is open to those 21 or older at a cost of $5 per head at the door.

“Cracked and Crooked” is a nod to the haunting specter of effervescent adolescence, born of the stank depths of wood-paneled basements and industrial ruins of suburban Middle America, composed from a distance growing with each click of the clock, bathed in lycanthropic fuzz, delivered with feeling.

Rock and roll, through all of its innumerable mutations across time, is a vehicle primarily driven by the guitar. The Post Mortems formed in absence of the six-stringed stalwart — obstacle as opportunity. At first Devin Alexander (bass, vocals, songwriting) and Al Raymond (drums, songwriting) simply filled the void with effects pedals, energy, and volume, which they released in spades. But something changed as the band matured. Experience lofted them to a new vantage point. The bridge is the embodiment of limitation; the chasm is limitless … and there’s probably cool stuff down there.

“’Cracked and Crooked’ represents a band carving itself away for five years until it found the bare essentials to exist powerfully,” says Alexander. “Without guitars, keys, and extra instruments in the mix, each element that remains is immense, loud, and has room to howl, shrug, breathe, crumble, rebuild, and live in ways that other recordings don't always afford them. A voice, a bass, and drums all exist in their own sonic realms, and speak without the need to make allowances to the others.”

It’s hard to believe that Alexander and Raymond used nothing more than bass, drums, and vocals on “Cracked and Crooked” — the album sounds positively immense — but it’s true. The Post Mortems sound, and feel, nine-tenths as massive live. In these moments one sees exactly what two men armed with nothing but a drum kit, a bass, effects pedals, and amplification are capable of with the application of energy and passion.

“Cracked and Crooked,” released on Alexander’s own Quad-City-based label, Gentle Edward Records, is available for electronic purchase on iTunes and Amazon. The album will be released on compact disc at the RIBCO show on March 7 and will be available for purchase at fine record stores worldwide and all ensuing Post Mortems live performances.
