Lorde's International Winning Streak Continues At Brit Awards

Bookmark and Share

New Zealand born songwriter and APRA AMCOS member Lorde has won the "International Female Solo Artist" award at the 2014 Brit Awards announced in London last night. Lorde (Ella Yelich-O'Connor) won against a world-class group of contenders including Pink, Katy Perry, Janelle Monae and Lady Gaga for the prize.

It continues a great year for Lorde, she also took out two awards at the Grammys in January. At the American ceremony she won 'Best Solo Performance' and 'Song of the Year' which she shared with co-writer and fellow APRA AMCOS member Joel Little.

Both awards were for the hit song 'Royals' from her debut album Pure Heroine. The song spent an amazing nine weeks at number one in the Billboard Charts and has amassed over 300 million views on YouTube (US and UK versions combined).

Lorde was one of the performers at the Brit Awards renowned for its extravagant and different versions of popular songs. She didn't disappoint: appearing on stage with UK dance outfit Disclosure for a combined performance of 'Royals' and Disclosure's 'White Noise.'

APRA AMCOS Head of Member Service, Dean Ormston, said "There has been much talk recently in the press about the lack of recognition for female songwriters. It's heartening to see female songwriters like Lorde and Sia endorsed so highly at an international level. It bodes well for New Zealand and Australian songwriters and particularly for female songwriters. Hopefully it will inspire the next wave of Australian and New Zealand female songwriters."
