Richmond’s Black Girls have emerged from the miasma of modern rock, channeling decades of good vibrations. The quintet’s second full-length studio album, Claire Sinclaire, is a mastery of hazy, psychedelic soul injected with dollops of glam, surf and pop. This 9-song genre-bender of an LP is out April 1 in time for a US tour. The Line Of Best Fit has an exclusive premiere of the lead-off single “Buyin’ Time."
On paper, Black Girls might seem like a sonic novelty, but their mastery of space and time allows the band to careen through a live set like five drunken spirit animals, assimilating delighted crowds with every show. Three-part vocal harmonies, reverb-glistened guitars, and captivating rhythms are merely the icing on an already decadent layer cake. Previous supporting slots for Alabama Shakes, The Head and the Heart, Wavves, Kendrick Lamar and Macklemore have prepared them to take their rightful place in the national consciousness.
Claire Sinclaire begins with “On The First Night,” a glitz-pop banger wedged firmly in the counterpunches of Roxy Music and LCD Soundsystem. Jeff Knight’s Fuzzy bass murmurs and drummer/vocalist Stephen Farris’ piston snare hits carry the band through “Banging LA” equipoised by lead vocalist Drew Gillihan’s croon and the dueling wet work of guitarists Michael Bryant and Fletcher Babb. “Buyin’ Time” is the first single from the album with lyrics declaring, “Slow and steady, it just runs in the family” a fine analogy for a band in no hurry to show all their cards. By the time the album gets to “Lover” things have mutated into a lounge review of Billy Joelian proportions. “Kaleidoscopes” closes the album with acoustic guitars, organs, and Farris’ charming vocal interplay evokes Animal Collective. With myriad genres explored and endeared, any fan of truly authentic pop music will find something meaningful in Claire Sinclaire.
