DANNY BLU - A Rebel With A Compassionate Cause

By Ralph White

It's often said that some people just talk the talk while others walk the walk. Then, on rare occasions, you have people like Danny Blu who are out there stripping it down, taking it off, and using his body as a billboard to get our attention in order to stop the hate behind an epidemic we call "BULLYING".

On a recent evening at the Ella Lounge, a New York City nightclub, Blu and his band The Factory took the stage to play some songs. With their second CD, "saint", already on the market it's not unusual for a band to be out on the road to perform wherever a spotlight shines. It's less usual for a group of industrial pop players to share that spotlight and embrace a cause as passionately as these guys do in their crusade to battle teenage and cyber bullying.

Statistically speaking, 9 out of 10 LGBT teens report being bullied because of their sexual orientation, and more than 40% have attempted suicide. Of the 84% of kids who have reported verbal harassment at school, 28% of those students dropped out because of this harassment. As part of the LGTBQ community, Danny Blu uses his art to promote a message of inclusion and acceptance. He also offers the kind of help and guidance that he wished someone had offered him while growing up and still in high school.

Beginning the night's set dressed in what appeared to be a white trench coat and thigh-high leather boots, Danny sang a few songs to the crowded house from his earlier album, "Do Your Worst", before launching into the newer material. Then, addressing his audience on a more somber note he shared with them what it was like growing up being bullied. As he did he began to remove his shiny black boots, and then the trench coat, until he stood before the packed house of New York club goers wearing only what appeared to be a black censor's bar that hid his groin.

His naked body was covered in words painted in different colors upon his skin. These words, he explained to the crowd, were the very words used by other kids at the school he attended as the insults and taunts he received from them on usually a daily basis: FAG, LOSER, FAKE, FATTY, UGLY, WHORE, STUPID, SLUT, etc., etc...

Blu also suggested ways that people could help these kids and some organizations they could contact and support, like: The Equality Project, Hate The Hate or B'way Battles Bullying. They offer outreach and assistance for kids when they don't know where, or who else to turn to when their usual support network has failed them.

We all have those times in our lives where we wish we could've stood up for someone, but we didn't. Now here's our chance to take a stand and right a wrong. Just go to Danny Blu's web site (http://thefactoryblu.com) to find out more about what you can do to help. You too can speak out for change and silence the bullies. Oh, and clothing is optional.
