Skope Reviews Jaino “Mr. Politician”

Jakob Höök a.k.a. “Jaino” is a songwriter-rapper based in Malmoe, Sweden. His background, however, ranges far beyond the Nordic region. Born in Barcelona, he and his “rebellious and unafraid” mother would venture to such far-off lands as India, Morocco, and Thailand.

Young Jaino cared little for school, far preferring the soccer field, where he excelled. After trying to make it as a soccer pro in Spain, he headed to Sweden, where he undertakes the less glamorous (though rather thought-provoking) job of transporting dead bodies to the morgue.

This is the sort of gig that can beget lyrical inspiration. Having quietly penned hip-hop lyrics since he was a teenager, Jaino decided to become more proactive. He hit the recording studio for the first time in 2013, and we now have his single “Mr. Politician.”

The track begins with slow but dramatic synth music. A soft female voice takes the forefront at 0:20. Jaino himself takes over at 0:38. He has a fluid delivery. Though there’s definitely anger in his voice, there’s also something thoughtful and compelling. He addresses the hard-luck struggles of the chronically indigent, as well as the hypocritical, fat-cat lifestyle of the ‘Mr. Politician’ who presides over them.

There’s an earnest sense of pain in the lyrics. But the track is pleasing to listen to – from the tragic-sounding piano in the background to the deftly rendered vocals. It’s also quite impeccably produced.

Rumor has it that a full-length Jaino album, Talking To Myself, is slated for release at some point in 2014.

And, yes, folks: there’s good hip-hop in Sweden!
