NY Singer-Songwriter Takes On Ted Cruz, NRA

Michael Weiskopf, a New York-based singer/songwriter, pulls no punches on his second album ‘Suffering Fools,’ which asks what’s wrong with the world.

Weiskopf runs through a who's who of Canadian popular music on "Thank You, Canada (The Ted Cruz Song)."

"I wrote 'Ted Cruz' after watching him make some typical demagogue remark about President Obama not being a citizen. It occurred to me that nobody made any issue out of McCain being born in Guam and that Cruz was born in Canada. The fact that his name is being tossed around as a serious presidential candidate is disturbing enough but in addition, the hypocrisy and racism of his exploiting the ignorance of the ‘Birthers’ is outrageous on its face. Then I started thinking about all of the great people that have come here from Canada and some of the not so great ones. So, the song was born. Bottom line, Cruz is the worst Canadian import in recent memory. By his own definition he is not qualified to be president. Just thought I would point it out.”

“’Guns Don’t Kill’ is an attempt to paint a portrait of the world from inside the mind of someone capable of Sandy Hook and the absurdity of our lack of significant gun control. It was written a few days after.”

“Thank You Canada (The Ted Cruz Song)” is being streamed for free at: http://www.michaelweiskopf.com

Among Suffering Fools’ 9 tracks is “No Reason,” a 9-1/2-minute contemporary rethinking of Bob Dylan’s “It’s Alright Ma (I’m Only Bleeding),” and a cover version of Bruce Cockburn’s “Pacing the Cage.”
