WSPN College Radio DJ Wins 3Rd IRF Best US/Canada Music Show Contest

The International Radio Festival (IRF) named Alexander Spinelli as the winner of the 2014 "Best US/Canada College DJ competition." Alex is a DJ on WSPN 91.1 FM - Skidmore College Radio, a non-commercial, college radio station located on the Skidmore campus in Saratoga Springs, NY, USA. WSPN is a student-run radio station, focusing on freeform programming and is run entirely by a selected student board, ranking #19 on the Princeton review's list of top college radio stations in 2013. Alex will present his show, "RECESS: with SPINELLI" at the 5th annual IRF, taking place September 3-7 at the famous Kaufleuten in Zurich. The contest partner is iBiquity Digital, the creators of HD Radio Technology; and media partners are CMJ and Mixcloud.com.

Over 105 submissions from the US and Canada were received via mixcloud.com, representing a 27% increase in submissions from the past contests. Applicants were asked to upload one of their radio shows to demonstrate their skill, personality and musical knowledge. The panel of judges included the Founder/CEO of the IRF, Darryl von Daniken along with input from the IRF Advisory Board headed by President, the legendary Tony Prince of Radio Caroline past and founder of DMC World and Mixmag.

"The IRF thanks all the US and Canadian college Radio Stations and its DJs for their participation in our third contest. The next generation of radio makers demonstrate such a wide range of dedication and talent to music radio," said von Daniken. "RECESS: with SPINELLI" is a great example of the fresh music shows that the IRF is known for around the world and we look forward to welcoming Alex to Zurich this Fall."

"Congratulations to Alex Spinelli for winning the IRF Best College DJ. iBiquity is proud of our partnership with the IRF, highlighting outstanding DJs from US & Canadian Universities", said Joseph D'Angelo, SVP, iBiquity. "Thanks to Alex, WSPN will be receiving a free license to use HD RADIO technology (normally $10,000) from iBiquity, and have the opportunity upgrade their broadcast equipment and join the over 2,200 radio stations in the USA that have upgraded to HD Radio Technology. WSPN's audiences have been enjoying Alex's tremendous talents, and now they will also receive all the benefits of HD Radio digital broadcasting.""

"College radio is a great platform which makes the medium more accessible to a younger audience, building campus and community relations and for promoting local and emerging musicians. I'm thrilled to represent WSPN and am grateful to the IRF for this opportunity. I am looking forward to meeting DJs from around the world in Zurich this September," said Spinelli.

Spinelli's show "RECESS: with SPINELLI" is broadcast Thursday nights (20:00-22:00 EDT) at WSPN 91.1 FM and the winning show format includes global & local new music; interviews with local & international musicians, as well as special performances in the studio, news, and insight into the new music scene for the 21st Century. "RECESS: with SPINELLI" has also aired from the following stations: WOMM-LP in Burlington, VT; IC Radio (Imperial College) & ZoneOneRadio in London, England; and all recorded broadcasts can be found online: www.mixcloud.com/RecessWithSpinelli. Spinelli's passion for radio began as a DJ at WWPV "The Mike" (St. Michael's College) in Colchester, Vermont, and is currently focusing on foreign language and media studies while at Skidmore College.

About the International Radio Festival (IRF) Since its inaugural year in 2010, the IRF brought together more than 100 ground-breaking music radio shows from around the world, enabling their makers the exceptional opportunity to showcase their best music radio programmes in the presence of their peers and industry professionals; "live On-Air" to the general public visiting the Festival, to their listeners back home, and online around the world, offering those tuned-in the rare opportunity to "Listen to how the World Sounds". The Festival's B2B Forum established itself as a think-tank and exchange hub for both the players in music radio as well the music industry.
