Australia Chosen As Feature Country For 2015 Canadian Music Week
Canadian Music Week (CMW) announced that Australia would be the 'spotlight country' for CMW 2015 (5th-9th May in Toronto). The event will highlight Australia's strength as a music exporter and follows a very successful CMW 2014 for Australian music. After showcasing Australian talent in previous years including The Jezabels, The Falls, Jordi Lane, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, Blue King Brown, The Beards, Kate Miller Heidke, DZ Deathrays, The Lazys, Busby Marou, Emma Louise and You Am I, CMW 2015 will see Australia take the international focus.
CMW President Neill Dixon said the decision to choose Australia as the spotlight nation was based on a strong domestic scene:
"Australia has a unique musical ecosystem which does not have to rely upon global sales, global distribution or artist success abroad in order to be successful. Their labels are successful and their distribution foundation is strong. The amount of profitable festivals and music venues remains the highest in the world.
"The continent is an excellent outlet for Canadian bands to remain active in otherwise down seasons. The economy is motivated, the Australian dollar is climbing and somewhat stable, so people can part with discretionary spending. There is a lot that we can learn from Australia and we plan to explore and uncover as much of it as we can at CMW 2015."

Executive Producer of SOUNDS AUSTRALIA Millie Millgate said the opportunity is a perfect time to highlight Australian music:
"After establishing and building a significant footprint for Australian artists and industry at Canadian Music Week over the last five years, the time is ripe for us to proudly wear the 'Spotlight Country' mantle in 2015.
"We look forward to consolidating the partnerships and networks already developed with our kindred music nation, whilst forging new opportunities and greater access for more of the incredible talent that's exploding out of Australia."
Delegations from Australia have long been part of Canadian Music Week. This has resulted in a number of business prospects and transactions for Canadian labels, managers and artists. The 2014 edition saw the highest representation of Australian artists ever at the festival. SOUNDS AUSTRALIA produced three showcase events across the week; Sound Gallery, Beat Pie and The Aussie BBQ.
Next year's event will see an increased opportunity for building relationships with key music industry networks and showcasing more Australian talent. Key partners including SOUNDS AUSTRALIA, BIGSOUND, CAAMA, and the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada are supporting the 2015 CMW venture.
