MTA Arts For Transit Chooses 23 Groups And Individuals To Join Music Under New York Program

Bookmark and Share

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority's Arts for Transit & Urban Design today announced that 23 performers and groups have been accepted into the Music Under New York program. The musicians were chosen from approximately 60 acts that performed before judges at the program's 27th annual auditions on May 13 in Grand Central Terminal, where Arts for Transit also unveiled a new logo and brand identity for the program by the design firm Pentagram.

A panel of musicians, music professionals and transit representatives judged the performers based on quality, variety, and appropriateness for the mass transit environment. The musicians that auditioned this year represented the diversity of music and its genres, including Aboriginal didgeridoo, bluegrass, Brazilian jazz, traditional Chinese orchestral music, soul, and klezmer.

Based on their scores, the following acts were selected to join Music Under New York:
12 HR - pop/R&B duo
Asylum Quartet - saxophonists
Brown Rice Family - world roots music ensemble
CBA - traditional Chinese ensemble
Daylight Savings - bebop and jazz quartet
Allan Goodman - ukulele
Mike Groisman - 1980's rock guitarist
Tara Hack - singer/songwriter
Kevin Herbert - solo finger-style guitar
IgoGna - Moroccan Gnawa musicians
Jasmeen - opera, jazz and gospel singer
Mehman Jonson - singer-songwriter duo
Lucky Chops Brass Band - brass ensemble
Marcus Miller & Wave Music - jazz, folk, soul and pop musicians
Ricky K - clarinet and bass jazz duo
Anthony Riley - singer
Street Rags - ragtime xylophone
The Good Morning Nags - roots bard trio
The Side Project - saxophone quartet and drum
Train'd Singers - classical and seasonal music
Gabe Valle Trio - gypsy trio
Catherine Wynder - classical viola
Yut & the Hot Four - dancing string quartet and percussion

Music Under New York's roster includes more than 350 individuals and groups who give approximately 7,500 performances in 30 locations around the MTA system each year. To audition, musicians must submit a completed application form and a performance sample on CD by March. Music Under New York is one of many visual and performing arts programs administered by Arts for Transit to enhance the station environment for customers.
