IndieFINANCIALnetwork Celebrates Thirty Years In Music

Briarcliff Manor, New York, June 9, 2014. Established by Rick Kennell in 1984, the indieFINANCIALnetwork will celebrate 30 years in business on June 12th, 2014. The “iFn” is a business management firm, focused exclusively on the music industry. They have carved out a niche, by providing off-premises CFO services to “indie” artists and music companies.

Surviving several name changes, the iFn is involved in the careers of Ronnie Spector, Dawn Landes, Storyman, David Krakauer, Bill Laswell and Mark Wood. Affiliated record labels include: Ani DiFranco’s Righteous Babe, United For Opportunity and Alan Douglas Records. The iFn is also the home to Invasion Group, and their extensive roster of management clients. “This has been a busy year, with Storyman on the road with Ingrid Michaelson and Dawn Landes touring with Brian Ferry. Invasion’s Gail Ann Dorsey has been playing shows with Lenny Kravitz, David Krakauer is returning to Europe, and Bill Laswell has been performing in Europe and Japan. Mark Wood is busy delivering his “Electrify Your Strings” program to schools, and is featuring his Rock Orchestra Camp in July.”

Why indie, you might ask? “It was heartbreaking to see the major label artists come and go, never knowing why, or where to point the finger. Was the manager at fault for not quarterbacking the right team? Was it the agent’s fault for not securing the right tour? Maybe it was the label’s fault for not spending the marketing dollars in the right place? Or was it the fault of the producer, or even the band, for not making the right record?” When the major label dominance began to level off years ago, Rick decided to concentrate on the indie sector. Along with iFn Royalty Administrator, CPA Fei Wu, the iFn has developed a significant indie label royalty business.

There have been offers to merge with conventional CPA firms along the way, but Rick enjoys staying fiercely independent. “If a band stumbles upon hard times, I might want to carry them for a while, but if I do, I don’t want to answer to any partners. I stay lean and mean by keeping my overhead low, and I won’t delegate your financial concerns over to the bookkeeper. I look at our relationship more like a partnership.”

“These days - it seems like there is a blur between my friends and my clients, who have all become part of the family. We are sponsoring a “Concert On The Lake” featuring “Three Stories Tall” in Kent Lakes, New York on the evening of June 12th. “It’s our way of saying thanks to those who have been so instrumental in our success over the past thirty years”.
