The anticipation that was building up since early this year, finally peaked as the Planetrox China Final arrived on 14 June 2014 and five finalist bands went head-to-head to win it.

And it was a final that didn't disappoint; we started off with Mr Rocket Head, the pop-funk rockers who sing in Cantonese passionately, followed by the modern classic rock band Bamboo Star, who brought their layered-vocal harmonies to the forefront. Third up was Turing Apples, who chose to play their dirty indie pop despite lead vocalist Niki Parrington suffering dizzy spells. Fourth up were the ska French rock band Les Gromechkos. Finally, with their catchy songs and infectious energy, WonderGarl closed the night with their typical sky-high spike in enthusiasm despite a member missing due to family member going into hospital. Being fun to listen to and even more fun to watch live, it turns out, was the formula to win, as Wondergarl claimed the first prize with a unanimous decision from the three judges.

All this was witnessed by a record crowd of over 200 people in Backstage, and was judiciously overseen by a panel of judges from the music industry. In the panel were Hang Jai, vocalist of ToNick, popular local Hong Kong band, HKGFM's music director Cliff Babbs, and none other than the director and founder of Envol et Macadam, Simon Gaudry. First runners up, Les Gromechkos, took home HK$2000 in vouchers from Tom Lee.
The moment of reckoning elicited some very emotional reactions and huge cheers emanated from the crowd, as Wondergarl was declared the band to represent China at the Envol et Macadam festival in Canada.

Says Chris B, organiser of Planetrox China, "The bands this year were a very nice mix that demonstrated the variety of musical talents China has to offer, I consider each finalist band a winner and hope that they wear the honour of being a Planetrox China finalist proudly – and of course, congratulations to Wondergarl, and thank you once again to Envol et Macadam for offering this wonderful opportunity to China bands to make it big in the global music scene!”

Says Kelvin Lo, lead vocalist, Wondergarl. “We are really honoured and excited to be the Champion in Planetrox China 2014! We will bring our Cantonese songs and culture to Canada and share with all audiences!"

Wondergarl 神奇膠 are a Hong Kong-based six piece band. They have been pillars of the local music scene since 2008, wowing crowds all around Hong Kong & Southern China. Their songs are known for their unique playfulness and wit that perfectly encapsulates the spirit and culture of Hong Kong teens.
