Fania Records Introduces Newest Band Signing Timothy Brownie

Bookmark and Share

Fania Records, the historic Latin label celebrating its 50th anniversary this summer, will introduce music fans to its newest musical addition to the Fania family, Timothy Brownie, when the label releases their new EP 'Buffalo Beat' on July 8, 2014. The Mexico City-based four-member instrumental band have melded a unique sonic palette that includes electropop, psychedelic rock, Latin and funk. Known for their captivating music videos and dynamic live performances, Timothy Brownie have earned a strong following in Latin America, thanks to memorable performances at international festivals such as Goliath Fest (with Thievery Corporation), Maquinaria Fest in Buenos Aires (with Calle13), Surf Music Festival I,II and III in Puerto Escondido, Winter Beach at Playa del Carmen (with Los Amigos Invisibles and Café Tacuba), Electric Planet Festival (Mexico), Heinken Winter Festival, and selected to the opening slots for bands such as Royksopp, Friendly Fires, The Rapture and Hot Chip in Mexico City.

On their Fania Records 6-track debut EP, 'Buffalo Beat,' the band deftly showcases their skillful fusion of melodic rhythms and instrumental layering. Standout tracks include the hypnotic "Jugo de Frutas," featuring Latin-influenced horns, driving guitars and outstanding percussion, and "Buffalo Beat," on which the band utilized the original recordings of the 1965 Johnny Colon boogaloo classic featuring Tito Ramos, "Boogaloo Blues" to reinvent the track in a fresh new manner. The band will perform these tracks and others when they make their NYC concert debut at SOBs July 10 as part of the Fania 50th anniversary summer concert series.

The members of Timothy Brownie bring with them an impressive combination of talent and artistic credentials: Mexico City native drummer Uriel Del Toro, who has had a multi-faceted career as a skilled drummer with several punk rock bands in Mexico and Argentina, an in-demand top male fashion model in Latin America and Spain, a fashion television host, and celebrated star of the hit Telemundo telenovela "La Impostora;" bass player and keyboardist Mariano Lanus, a native of Bariloche, Argentina who is the band's art designer for all album artwork and music producer performed with many rock bands in Argentina before moving to Mexico in 2005, and has a stellar resume as an engineer and producer for multiple MTV World Stage Mexico events from 2010-2013 that featured bands such as Fall Out Boy, 30 Seconds to Mars, Zoe and Linkin Park; and Mexico City native Andres "Güero" Cruz, who in addition to playing guitar, theremin & sequences, is also partner of VDM, a Mexican audiovisual production studio where several of the band's video clips were made. The newest member of the band, guitarist and Mexico City native Charly Segura, who joined in 2013, brings with him impressive classical guitar training and performance stints with several Mexican bands.

The band's visually arresting and inventive video clips were created by Andres "Güero" Cruz and Tamir Lotan , band co-founder and manager who is Uriel's brother and a filmmaker, TV producer, photographer and painter. Tamir has also filmed videos for other artists including Calle 13, Ricardo Arjona and La Mississippi Blues Band.

"We always knew Fania was a label with prestige and part of the history of Latin music," says Tamir Lotan, "and we were surprised at the amount of tracks they had, the idea of combining the music of the Maestro Timothy Brownie with tracks of Fania was an instant connection. Once we met the Fania team, we realized that is also a beautiful family, we are so proud and happy to be part of this story "
