Sonoma State University has announced the appointment of Melissa Sanders to the newly-created position of Senior Director for Communications at the Green Music Center. Sanders has served as Senior Director of Communications for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra since 2008.

In this new position, Sanders will oversee public relations, marketing, advertising, and other communications activities for Sonoma State University's worldclass performing arts complex, including Joan and Sanford I. Weill Hall and Lawn, Schroeder Hall, and Prelude Restaurant.

"I have had the pleasure of knowing Melissa for many years, and know firsthand the wealth of experience she brings to this organization," said Green Music Center CoExecutive Director Zarin Mehta. "As Weill Hall and the Green Music Center continue to grow, Melissa's knowledge of the performing arts and communications industries will be a key asset in shaping our future. I know I speak on behalf of the administration and Board of Advisors when I say that we are delighted for her to join us in Sonoma County."

At the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Sanders led communications for all Atlanta Symphony Orchestra-related activities, including performances at Atlanta Symphony Hall, Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park and Chastain Park Amphitheater. Her focus centered on traditional and social media relations, crisis communications and issues management, content strategy and development, integrated marketing-communications projects, and executive communications .

Sanders also spent 11 years in New York City as a member of the public relations department of the New York Philharmonic. During that time, she developed and implemented strategic publicity campaigns for more than 200 annual subscription and special concerts, as well as international tours and residencies, national radio broadcasts, BBC Radio 3 broadcast series, "Live from Lincoln Center" national telecasts, education programs, special events, summer Concerts in the Parks, and New York Philharmonic recordings. She has also served as a public relations consultant for classical and world music ensembles, and began her communications career working with arts organizations in Ohio, including Opera Columbus and BalletMet Columbus.

Sanders is a member of the Public Relations Society of America, and currently serves on its national Executive Committee for the Entertainment and Sports section. She is also a member of the League of American Orchestras and The Recording Academy, and serves on the Public Relations Advisory Committee of Georgia Music Partners. She has guest lectured at the University of Georgia, Eastern Kentucky University, and Georgia State University on public relations and media industries.

In 2012, Sanders was named a "Rising Star in the Performing Arts" by Musical America for her creative and "outside the box" approach to communications. A graduate of The Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism/Public Relations, Sanders is also a former musician - flute and baritone horn and a former athlete.
