UMG'S EMI Returns To China And South East Asia With A-Mei, Show Lo And Rainie Yang

The legendary label EMI is making history once again in China and South East Asia with the signing of Mandopop superstar A-Mei as well as the popular artists Show Lo and Rainie Yang, as part of its revival and return to the region. The announcement was made at a press conference at the launch of the new EMI China.

EMI ended much of its operations in Asia over five years ago but in 2012 the company was acquired by Universal Music Group and UMG has been investing in and reinvigorating the storied label ever since.

Max Hole, Chairman and CEO of Universal Music Group International said: "EMI's heritage in the region makes this is a very exciting re-launch. At Universal Music we're huge believers in the potential for the music business in China and the importance of investing in local artists. A-Mei, Show Lo and Rainie Yang are such talented artists that I'm delighted they have agreed to join us in the new EMI China."

George Ash, President, Universal Music Asia Pacific comments: "It is an honour to be part of rebuilding EMI which has such a rich legacy of supporting Chinese artists and music in China. Today, we are starting the next chapter in this story by welcoming A-Mei, Show Lo, and Rainie Yang, three of the most talented and iconic artists in China, to the EMI label."

"Sunny Chang is the best music man in China and with his leadership and incredible team we are committed to building EMI into one of China's great domestic labels once again and a central part of a vibrant and internationally successful Chinese music industry."

At the press conference, A-Mei was named EMI's Greater China Brand Director to acknowledge her iconic stature in the Chinese music scene. The Mandarin pop diva, one of TIME magazine's 20 Asian Heroes, then made the surprise announcement that Show Luo and Rainie Yang, both hugely popular award-winning performers, would also be joining her as part of the new EMI China family and all three superstars appeared together on stage to mark the official launch the new label.

Sunny Chang, Chairman & CEO, Universal Music Greater China, welcomed the artists to EMI saying: "We are proud to continue EMI China's enduring legacy through A-Mei, Show and Rainie. This is the start of a new era for the label and we are excited to bring the music of these well-loved artists to a new generation of fans."

EMI has a long history of supporting artists and music in China. Pioneering sound engineer Fred Gaisberg, one of the most influential figures in the development of the recording industry, visited Shanghai in 1903 and made a series of ground breaking-recordings of Chinese artists of the day for The Gramophone Company, the business that was the foundation of EMI. These recordings were sold both within China and overseas. EMI itself was formed in 1931 through a merger of The Gramophone Company and Columbia Graphophone. In China Columbia controlled two Chinese labels, The China Record Company and Pathé Orient Ltd, and in 1933 these two companies were merged to form EMI China. This first incarnation of EMI China remained in operation until the 1950s.
