Father Dagon Uses Experimental Improvised Music To Generate Fear

Father Dagon, a new immersive performance by Dread Falls Theatre, inspired by the works of H. P. Lovecraft, will use live experimental music to create a mood of uneasiness and terror. Victoria Snaith, writer and director of the show, says Father Dagon will emulate the author’s sense of fear, what Lovecraft claims is,“the oldest and strongest emotion of mankind,” specifically “fear of the unknown”. Snaith intends to generate this disquieting aire by “creating a performance where the audience is free to roam, taking away the comfortable space between audience and performer, and thereby creating a feeling of unknowing and fear. This will be intensified by using physical instead of aural storytelling, to create an unknown language, reminiscent of the indescribable nature of Lovecraft’s creatures.”

The music in Father Dagon will take a prominent role in creating this eerie atmosphere. Improvised soundscapes will be performed live by four mobile musicians that will accent the actor’s movements and surround the attendees. Furthermore, the music will be performed on non-traditional and homemade instruments, such as shelf brackets, ceremonial percussion, amplified springs, and altered electronics, the unique sounds of which will add to the unfamiliarity of the surroundings for the audience.

Dread Falls Theatre’s music director, Will Connor, commented, “the four performers, Seesar, Anton Mobin, Akoustik Timbre Frekuency, and raxil4, were selected based on their dark and unusual sounds, improvising ability, and their knowledge of the writings of Lovecraft.” All four musicians will appear on the soundtrack to the Father Dagon show being released simultaneously with the show’s opening by Oakland record label Zos Kia Sounds Recordings.

Father Dagon will run from the 27th through the 30th of August at East London’s Rag Factory, 16-18 Henegae Street, E1 5LJ. Tickets and more information are available at the Father Dagon event page here: http://www.facebook.com/events/682555195145213.
