Armonia And MusicMark In Talks To Find Opportunities For Collaboration

Bookmark and Share

MusicMark, a rights management platform comprised of North American performing rights societies ASCAP (USA), BMI (USA) and SOCAN (Canada), and Armonia, a platform comprised of European societies Artisjus (Hungary), SABAM (Belgium), SACEM (France and Luxembourg), SGAE (Spain), SIAE (Italy) and SPA (Portugal), have engaged in a dialogue to identify ways to collaborate.

Both alliances share the vision of a pragmatic, step-by-step approach to improve services for the members of their respective societies (authors, composers, publishers). MusicMark and Armonia both aim to leverage what has been developed and implemented by their societies in the documentation of musical works. Three priorities have been identified for cooperation:

• Formalize a common vision of an authoritative, worldwide view on music rights ownership, through international cooperation between MusicMark and Armonia, and potentially other societies and documentation centers worldwide

• Speed up and enhance the flow of documentation between societies and documentation centers, to more efficiently bring value to songwriters, composers and publishers

• Develop common processes for administration, especially in the context of the challenges of online music use

In a first phase, MusicMark and Armonia will identify specific cooperative projects that can best suit these priorities. Enrique Gomez Piñeiro (SGAE's General Manager and President of the Management Board of Armonia): "The fact that both alliances, which represent a major part of the world repertoire, share such an important vision in a pragmatic approach represents a historic milestone in collective rights management. Our aim is to extend support for this vision to the rest of the community as a feasible, realistic way of reaching the final goal for an authoritative view of the repertoires worldwide. This should serve to get value for the industry by optimizing common problems from the outset. We are very excited about this initiative and fully committed to progressing towards the objectives we have identified".

The CEOs of ASCAP, BMI and SOCAN – John LoFrumento, Mike O'Neill and Eric Baptiste – commented on behalf of MusicMark: "MusicMark is built on collaboration, and the fundamental goals of streamlining music registration and creating a synchronized view of the music that our organizations represent. Our discussions with Armonia reflect that spirit, and we welcome further positive developments with them and other like-minded organizations."
