Discover Taiwan's Rich Legacy At TAIWANfest (August 22 - 24)

Bookmark and Share

From August 22 through 24, Harbourfront Centre hosts TAIWANfest, a weekend-long celebration of Taiwanese arts and cultural heritage. This year‚s theme, "Forget Me Not" will explore Taiwan‚s culture as influenced by all those who have touched their shores, from the Japanese to the Dutch. Over the course of the weekend, visitors to TAIWANfest will discover how these influences have been filtered through the lens of Taiwanese culture and into their present-day experience through food, music and performance.

Master chefs from Canada and Taiwan will duke it out to create the ultimate dish in the Rice Vs. Noodle battle, honouring those delicious starches that are staples in kitchens around the world. If that doesn‚t tempt the taste buds, the Taiwanese Banquet will impress with samples of over 30 delicious dishes, including the infamous Taiwanese chicken nuggets, oyster omelets, and Taiwanese beef noodle soup.

Music is often a window into the cultural climate. TAIWANfest is pleased to showcase contemporary music from the likes of The Village Armed Youth, Deserts Chang and Fire Ex; bands that represent the unbridled spirit of this island nation. This Taiwanese trifecta will perform pieces that demonstrate the significant role music has played in the recent social movements in Taiwan.

"As Taiwanese, so much of our lives today are about setting boundaries as we have been taught to fight for the right of existence and self-determination. We are constantly shifting boundaries as we are urged to build bigger communities and maintain a stronger consensus," explains Charlie Wu, Guest Artistic Associate for TAIWANfest. "Consequently, we have to find a higher meaning of life to combat the challenges of those paradoxes. After all, it's the ultimate love beneath these contradictions that fuel our progress."

TAIWANfest at Harbourfront Centre invites Torontonians of all backgrounds to explore the wonder and beauty of these contradictions, and experience the majesty of cultures coming together. This interactive weekend is filled with plenty of can't-miss events, covering everything from culinary to visual and performing arts.
