Cliburn Elects New Chairman-Elect Of The Board

Bookmark and Share

The Cliburn Board of Directors announces that it has elected Jeff King as chairman-elect. He will succeed Carla Kemp Thompson as chairman in September 2017.

Mr. King, president of the Fort Worth Region of The Northern Trust Company, began his Cliburn board service as a member of the executive committee in 2002, and has served as treasurer and chairman of the Trustee Committee since 2011.

Of his election, Mr. King said, "I am excited and humbled by the opportunity to serve as the new chairman of the Cliburn later this year. In a city long known for its cowboys and culture, and home to some of the highest quality artistic and educational venues in the country, the Cliburn stands out as truly world class. The significance of the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition to our city should not be lost on anyone. But just as important is the impact that the Cliburn has on our local community by bringing exceptional artists into our concert halls and our schools."

Mr. King succeeds Carla Kemp Thompson, who has served as chairman since January 2011. When she steps down later this year, she will have presided over two Van Cliburn International Piano Competitions, two Cliburn Amateur Competitions, and the inaugural Cliburn Junior Competition and Festival, as well as major expansions in the organization's concert and educational programs. Mrs. Thompson joined the Board of Directors in 1994, was treasurer for 12 years, and served as chairman of six Cliburn galas.

Mrs. Thompson said, "Jeff will work tirelessly for the Cliburn. He has been a valuable team member for several years and a pleasure to work with. Jeff brings experience from many previous community board leadership positions, and possesses the skills and desire to continue the Cliburn mission."

"We as citizens of this great city owe a debt of gratitude to Carla Thompson for her years of dedicated leadership as chairman of the Cliburn, as well as to President and CEO Jacques Marquis and his talented team," said Mr. King. "Together they have consistently produced the best artistic and educational experiences to be found anywhere. Van Cliburn was a gift to humanity; he bounded onto the world stage at the perfect moment in history. The volunteers and staff of the Cliburn are dedicated to carrying on his legacy by advancing and celebrating the very best in classical music."
