BORN TO WRITE: THE “O.G.” OF SPEECHES & LYRICS: MIKE GREENLY

When TIME and InfoWorld magazines both wrote about Mike Greenly as the world’s “first interactive electronic journalist,” his transition from being a Fortune 500 Officer (AVON, Lever Brothers) to a freelance writer had become officially complete.

Not only was he being recognized from Japan as a pioneer in using digital communications in news reports. Not only was he flown to Madrid to consult for the Government of Spain on the emerging world of online communications. But the global attention finally made it real in his own mind: he had left corporate life behind forever. Now he would focus on using his marketing and communications skills to help other executives advance their careers and messages – while continuing to write online for the fun of it, plus for the joy he found in writing song lyrics.

With two colleagues he’d met online, he formed the Transcoastal Electronic News Service (TENS.) He was on the third row as a journalist, typing into his clunky but state-of-the-art RadioShack laptop, when Steve Jobs launched Macintosh.

He became the first journalist to report on both the Democratic and Republican conventions and Hollywood’s Academy Awards, sending reports to followers around the world and getting back their appreciative responses.
After his stint in the corporate world, and in addition to his online journalism, Greenly segued successfully into being a much sought after speech writer and speech coach – with such clients as ExxonMobil; Google; IBM; Johnson & Johnson; New York Life; Novartis and Sanofi. Greenly’s motto with all his clients is Sound Like Yourself - Only Better.

Ann Juranek of ExxonMobil found Greenly a decade ago and turned to him multiple times since then, for herself and her team. “Mike is a true expert,” she says. “First in developing presentations that wonderfully achieve their objectives. Then in coaching delivery that makes his clients the winners they want to be.”
Concurrent with his freelance corporate work, Greenly became a song-smith. His most successful hit so far is, “Say Yes” by dance-music artist Jason Walker. It was Billboard’s #1 Dance Music hit in the U.S. in December. He’s had four other charted hits as well.
In addition to being the “secret weapon” of many executives, Mike has written songs for the likes of vocalist Kimberly Davis (who sings with Nile Rodgers’ Chic.) He’s the author of the Official Traditional State Song of Virginia (“Our Great Virginia”); "Always My Angel" (with composer Jim Papoulis) which honored the lost lives at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut; and “Everything Happens for a Reason”, written with composer Paul Guzzone and co-written and performed in Italian by tenor, Michéal Castaldo.
Greenly tells people that he “can barely change a light bulb” but it seems that he has always had an affinity for words. He still remembers the first poem he composed at the age of four.
Is songwriting akin to speechwriting?
“Absolutely,” he says. “A song or speech expresses something of importance to the person delivering the message. My job is to help that message be as effective as it can possibly be!”
