Sounds Australia Appoints Dom Alessio As Digital Export Producer

Bookmark and Share

In 2006, he co-founded the internet's first music blog dedicated solely to Australian music - a curated, digital signpost for promoting local talent - aptly named Who the Bloody Hell Are They?. Now, just over a decade later, Dom Alessio has been charged with developing the digital strategy for SOUNDS AUSTRALIA, leveraging curated digital services and promoting local artists to international markets.

"You'd be hard pressed to find anyone that knows about and has supported more Australian artists throughout their career. Hard-working, passionate and knowledgeable are just the surface of traits that make Dom the perfect choice to join SOUNDS AUSTRALIA's cheer squad". Executive Producer, Millie Millgate says of their latest recruit.

Many of the Australian artists currently taking the world by storm were awarded their first national airplay courtesy of Alessio, having captained triple j's week-nightly show Home & Hosed since January 2009.

As Digital Export Producer, Dom will be responsible for supporting SOUNDS AUSTRALIA's international program by bolstering exporting artists across all streaming platforms in order to fast-track the success of Australian music on the world stage.

As well as cultivating long-term relationships with streaming curatorial teams and building partnerships with key platform gatekeepers, Dom will evolve SOUNDS AUSTRALIA's digital presence beyond just an educational resource and into a premier content discovery portal.

He will pitch to specific global playlists and tastemaker blogs in advance of each international showcase conference event (such as SXSW, The Great Escape, Classical:NEXT, Americana, Primavera etc), assembled from the Official Artists chosen to showcase by the local programing and booking teams at the respective events. In addition, Dom will use his wealth of expertise to highlight yet-to-be-discovered artists, ahead of their exporting journeys.

Dom will also be responsible for creating and maintaining SOUNDS AUSTRALIA's own playlists, including songs from the 820+ artists that have showcased under the SOUNDS AUSTRALIA banner since inception in 2009.

Of the move and new position, Dom says "I'm so excited to be joining SOUNDS AUSTRALIA. They're some of the hardest working and most well-respected people in the Australian music industry and it's such an honour to be working alongside them. Australia is producing some of the best music in the world right now and I can't wait to be part of a team that helps spread that word around the globe."

"Since initiating SOUNDS AUSTRALIA in partnership with industry almost ten years ago, the Australia Council has always provided core funding, which we have reconfirmed for another four years. SOUNDS AUSTRALIA has always looked to be ahead of the pack in finding new ways to promote Australian artists internationally and with the astounding rise in streaming and playlists as a discovery mechanism it makes total sense to bring an expert like Dom into the team to ensure our artists are present wherever audiences are globally", said Paul Mason, Director Music, Australia Council for the Arts.

"With $43.5m royalties earned overseas by APRA AMCOS members in 2016-17, a 13.6 per cent year on year growth and more than double the $21.8m collected just four years ago, it's clear Australian contemporary music is one of our fastest growing export industries. We're thrilled to have Dom join the SOUNDS AUSTRALIA team to further reinforce Australian music talent on the global stage and support efforts to grow Australian representation on international playlists", said Dean Ormston, Head of Member Services, APRA AMCOS.
