Hej America! I am back with another review for my good fiends at Bongo Boy. This time around the album is called “Americana Music - HOMESTEAD VOL. 2” and is comprised of 13 tracks by some really good players.

Gar Francis - Fast Train 3:12 – Track one to paraphrase Bob Seger, is by one of my main men, Mr. Gar Francis. What is not to like as Gar’s funky side explodes and the listener cannot help but groove. Gar has the perfect voice for this kind of music, Just as AC/DC would not have been the same without Bon Scott, or Humble Pie would have been lacking had it not been for Steve Marriot, Gar has the perfect voice for this song and the rocking guitar does not hurt either.

Barley Station - 4th of July 2:19 – Get ready for a massive Billy Jam, I dig it. That bas is just so rock solid, and those strings are smoking. I tell anyone who blows off Country music in general or picking. The guys rock and they rock hard. Understand this is not Ozzy, this is more akin to “the masters” Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young – great playing and wonderful vocals.

Trevor Aaron Carlesi - Ship Without a Sea 2:27 – Oh yeah, I dig that funky twang on the guitar in the intro. There is no doubt the guitar could open up and steal the show if he wanted to do so. The band plays nice and no one steps on any toes. The vocals take the lead and he sings quite well. I just can’t shake the feeling that the rest of the band, including the keyboards, is itching to bust loose. Let’s hope that during the live show everyone gets an extended solo.

Annemarie Picerno – Bonfire 4:23 -Man, I dig this! The intro guitar is great, and that DEEP voice is fantastic. Then the other singers come in and suddenly I am captivated by a beautiful female voice. I really don’t know what to say. This is stunning song. The strings and drums are spot on, but it is the diverse range of voices that blows me away. They range from a guy so deep he could easily say “You rang?” To a woman who sounds like a young Dolly Parton, to a woman who could have come straight out of Motown. I would vote for this band simply because of their diversity of voices, each one of which excellent.

Ser Xerri - That Kind Of Man 4:55 – Lest you wondered Jack Kerouac is alive and well and living in the music of Ser Xerri. This is simple chord filled balled about heart break perpetrated by the singer. He said” If I took your hand and told you that you are the one, it was true at the time.” Ser does go into a nice melodic solo, but for the life of me all I can think is that this is a musical On the Road (Really if you have not read the book please do so and you will see what I mean.) Ser has nailed the pure combination of Country, Rock and Soul.

Mandy Brooks - Wayfaring Stranger 4:32 – I should start out that I am in love with Mandy, well her voice anyway, no need for a restraining order. I just listen to her music over and over. This track is a little different that some of her other music. She starts out with a little urban grind and groove, then that magnificent voice kicks in and I am memorized. The band is in such a tight groove and she is just blowing my mind with those spot on high notes and he massive range. Add to that a guitar man who can make it scream whenever he wants to do so and what you have is a track that is absolutely spellbinding.

Blind Lemon Pledge - The Hills Of West Virginia 4:17- Blind Lemon Pledge is another of my all-time favorite artists. This man is the epit you thome of soul. This song is, like all blues songs, a tale of hardship and woe, I had no idea it got so cold in the hills of West Virginia. Adding to the melancholy harmonies is the nothing short of depressing guitar, Don’ misunderstand, the instrument is played very well. He is simply to convey that much emotion with six stings. Excellent job!!

Tom Vicario - Baby Let's Go 2:42 – I feel like I have been transported back to 1955. This is a safe song about getting married; a song that would not freak out parents too much. If you listen carefully though, right in the middle and towards the end he pays homage the King Richard, someone white parents in the 1950s considered dangerous and subversive.

Kelly Caruso - Born Dainty 3:44 – WOW! I am blown away. Listen to this song! This chick has a killer voice and her band smokes. Tell me women can’t ROCK and I will tell you that you are a fool. This song starts off as a quasi-Country Jam and ends up as something that would make Skynyrd proud. Who is that absolutely ripping it up on guitar while those drums pound?? All the while Kelly’s fantastic voice just ROCKS. This song has anthem written all over it.

Revis Johnson - Bumpin Uglies 4:50 – Revis has a good voice and his band rocks in a good-old-boy way. At heart this is a love song that I am sure some women will enjoy for the lyrical content, personal I can never get enough slide guitar and there is a plethora of well-played guitar in this song.

Gar Francis - Constant Turn 4:16 – The man, Gar Francis has penned another anthem for the downtrodden. I am detecting a slight Joe Strummer influenced anarchist vibe in this song. I dig the harp. Frankly, the old Punk in me smiles each time Gar proclaims the world is going to burn. This is a statement to which every Punk I have ever known said “So what, thanks Hippies!”

12. Ser Xerri - Song for Samwise 5:27 – Ser has penned another ode to Jack or Dylan. The guitar is well played, and his voice really is very good. As Seger once said “Lord, I got to ramble” Ser, I wish you all the best in your travels and for God’s sake do not quit making music!

Blind Lemon Pledge - Give My Poor Heart Ease 5:06 – What a beautiful song about anyone who has suffered tragedy in their life. At one point, Blind Lemon Pledge says “Please show me your tender mercies Lord and show me some peace” Blind Lemon Pledge goes on to sing “They say that God will never burden you will more than you can bear, but listen God I am telling you, I believe I am almost there.” This song is beautifully sung and remarkably well played. It also hit me very hard personally in the gut. I try not to get political, because frankly I do not trust any of them, but as you may know my niece who when playing Rock and Roll (God, she was smoking bass player.) or in the world of modern flat track Rollerderby was known as Pixie Tourette. Flat track Rollerderby a sport she literally helped write the rules for and is now played worldwide. My niece was murdered along with her unborn child early on the morning of July 5th, 2016 in a small town in Idaho. The stress of this has caused my sister to have a stroke in the brain stem. It turns out that in many states the prosecutor is required by law to tell the defense everything the prosecutor finds out. The defense can then tell their client who can tell his family. On the other hand, it is against the law for the prosecutor to share any information with the victim’s family Please consider supporting https://marsyslaw.us/ in an attempt to give victims the same rights as killers.

Steve Morgan - It Ain't Well 3:53 – I really like the drums and groove laid down from the very beginning, It is clear that Steve can rock and I really like what his drummer is doing. I would love to see this band live and they come across as a great party band! Steve, you have brought I smile to my usually grouchy face, I guess I should call this type of music Good News Rock!

Steve Morgan - Two Wheels (the Motorcycle Anthem) 3:47 – Okay, any song that starts with a bike firing up. The guitar is excellent and actually reminds me on Bon Jovi when they first blew up. This song also has a Christian vibe to it. I usually dislike most “religious” songs as the music is sub-par and that somehow is considered acceptable because the message is so important. I can say without reservation that this music is NOT sub-par. Steve Morgan fronts a Rock and Roll band that just happens to be Christian – think early U2. Judge them for their music, not for their faith.
