With NME ceasing to print their publications due to low readerships and Spotify launching a successful IPO due to their incredible popularity March 2018 certainly proved to be a milestone for the music industry.

The music industry has rapidly changed, and Music PR companies need to change with it. No longer do we sit in-front of the TV watching MTV or other music channels to listen to music, MTV doesnít even play music anymore!

According to consumer reports, over 45% of people now consume music through streaming services such as Spotify, so promotion strategies need to vastly be adapted to suit the modern world of music consumption.

Traditional Music PR focusses primarily on major music publications as well as online blogs such as Pitchfork and Drowned in Sound, however Google Trends also suggests that interest and traffic to these sites is on the decline. This doesnít mean that these online blogs are not worth getting a feature, it can help an artist boost their overall profile as well as Spotify curators still use these blogs to discover music for their major playlists.

Music PR companies need to focus on where music is truly being discovered, we are entering a world where social media is becoming the powerhouse of promotion. Getting a popular Facebook page to share your latest music video is likely to provide more exposure and impact than any blog possibly can. A social media post gives your music the potential to go viral like no other publication can provide.

This can also be extended to Facebook advertising, this provides an enormous opportunity to get your music in front of the right audience who may become die-hard fans of your music. There is not only Facebook, it is possible to run ads on Youtube and Instagram for maximum exposure.

Further from Facebook and Spotify Promotion, YouTube is one of the fastest growing platforms in the world and is heavily tipped to revolutionise the way we consume media. Thousands of people every day are uploading their self-made content with viewerships of potentially millions for each video. With guaranteed hundreds of thousands of views, this is a perfect opportunity to give artistís music the exposure it deserves, by reaching out to large Youtube channels artists can get their music used in popular Youtube videos which can result in up to millions of views.

Music PR companies need to embrace these new methods, provide artists with the support and expertise they deserve to further their career and take it to the next level. We are slowly seeing Music PR companies introducing new products such as sync licencing deals and influencer marketing, but Burstimo argues that this isnít happening quickly enough, and companies must introduce the latest strategies or will be displaced by digital marketing agencies.
