New Single Review: Gentlemen And Scholars - 'Cruisin''

July 21st, 2017 Gentleman and Scholars released, “Revelry,” an album the four person band has recognized as one of their greatest achievements. The album consists of seven thoughtfully curated songs, one of which is called Cruisin'. The album is one of their first albums as an independent band not affiliated with any studio but their own.

When reviewing an indy band, there is always that little bit of trepidation you feel when you first play a song, wondering just what you'll be getting into. Luckily, Gentleman and Scholars is a band that seems to have it together. Cruisin immediately makes it clear that they mean business, and that this is a rock and roll band. The upbeat drum and heavy metal guitar riff start you off long before you hear any vocals. The beat is catchy and promising, which frankly, with how iffy independent music can be, makes listening to the opening notes a relief.

The song flowed from there. The vocals were pleasant, and the music lively. I would have liked it if a copy of the lyrics were available, as it was somewhat hard to understand more than the chorus line through the lead singer's vibrato. Despite this, you can enjoy the song just for what it is, a rock and roll tune that will keep you humming along, even if you don't quite know what it is you're humming.

Cruisin' is a big step in the future of Gentleman and Scholars, and an enjoyable one to hear. Their music video on another track in the Revelry Album, “Hold it Down” was also well done and shows a lot more polish than previous, professionally recorded songs. You can see that they have put a lot more effort into this album, and that they have a message they want to send out.

The band shares on their facebook page that this is their first album where they put more thought into the lyrics and melody of the songs. Usually, they invent songs as they play live, and simply add them to the next album when they reach what feels like a completion point.

This time around, they chose to put a lot of thought into their music, and even took care to ensure the quality of the tone by building their own music studio by hand. This dedication shows not just in the quality of their music, but in the quality of the band they hope to become.

This new approach to music has really made a positive impact in their work, and you can hear it in the upbeat rock and roll music they offer up in Revelry.

If you enjoy rock and roll music, you may enjoy the Revelry album. It is a great example of their current work, and has shown how much progress the band has made in just a few short years. If you're not sure, check out their official music on Bandcamp and hear for yourself what the band is all about.
