MP3.com Artists Rush To Assist Victims Through Music, Donations, Compassion

Bookmark and Share

SAN DIEGO, Sept. 14, 2001 -- Even before the dust had settled during Tuesday's terrorist attacks on U.S. soil, members of the MP3.com artist community pulled together to provide aid and comfort to victims and their families. More than 168,000 artists from 188 countries are represented on MP3.com (www.mp3.com) and visitors log in to the site from 240 countries worldwide.

Utilizing MP3.com message boards, emails and web pages, artists rushed to motivate others to donate blood, compose songs and organize benefit concerts. A wide variety of suggestions were discussed for contributing to relief efforts.

"Now is not the time to be self-promoting but to do what we can do help others," said pop & rock musician Rick Monroe (www.mp3.com/rickmonroeband), who waited in line six hours to donate blood in Los Angeles. "As artists, one thing we can do is help people deal with their emotions. I'm sure there's going to be a lot of songs written about the tragedies, along with benefit concerts to help those affected."

Monroe composed and sent an email to his fan base, complete with links to the American Red Cross, New York Blood Center, Firemen's Fund, United Way and Salvation Army. Other artists suggested that members of the MP3.com community donate a portion of their online CD sales, Payback for Playback(TM) earnings and concert/gig earnings to the Red Cross or other agencies.

Pop & rock artist, Chris McKay (www.mp3.com/chrismckay), composed "The End of the World" to honor victims and their families, and posted the lyrics on his MP3.com page. Electronic artist Curtis S.D. McDonald (www.mp3.com/curtismacdonald) composed and posted a requiem for the nation, "Long Walk Home." Several other MP3.com artists contributed a track to a Station page. Their music can be heard at the Songs for Tragedy Station (www.mp3.com/tragedy), where visitors are encouraged to contribute to the Red Cross.

MP3.com is assisting site visitors by posting a link at the top of its home page that transports users to the American Red Cross' San Diego-Imperial Counties Chapter web site. The site lets visitors donate to relief efforts online, by telephone, credit card, postal mail and other methods. The link, found at the upper right corner of www.mp3.com, will remain posted until Friday, September 21. "Artists were among the first to contact us and ask, 'What can I do?' and 'Where can I perform to help raise money for victims?'" said Sue Irey, public information associate for the chapter.

"We have found that the artistic community is one of the first to turn this tragedy into a positive, creative experience. Through their songwriting and the other endeavors they're engaged in, they are helping all of us. I envy their ability to cope with this tragedy. It has helped me and the rest of us involved in relief say to ourselves, 'What more can I do to help?'"

"It is a tribute to Americans that we are at our best, when circumstances seemingly couldn't get worse," said Robin Richards, chairman and chief executive officer of MP3.com. "And we're finding that, through the power of the Internet, people all over the world are joining us in grieving for and supporting those touched by the terrible tragedy on September 11. Our thoughts and prayers are with them all."

On an internal online bulletin board, MP3.com employees were provided instructions on how to donate their time, effort or blood. Counseling was also offered for those impacted by Tuesday's tragedy.
