FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, New York City, 11/14/01

Can you make a press release about something that didn’t happen?

That was the question that confronted us at Orange Dawg Productions. Generally, one would say no, but we have an amazing story that should be told.

The story begins in the utmost tip of northern New York State in the valley above the Adirondack Mountains. There we find the university town of Potsdam. which houses, among other schools, the Crane School of Music, part of the State University of New York (SUNY). This school produces many of the music teachers who go on to teach throughout New York State. The summer before last, Von Cello went up to Crane as part of “Yamaha Day”. This was a day of clinics given by Yamaha Artists to introduce Yamaha instruments and new ideas about music to the students of Crane. Von Cello did two clinics about his rock cello playing and his music books which teach popular styles of string playing (published by Oxford University Press).

The clinics went very well and the students were really into it, many signing up for the Von Cello email list. There was also a distinguished visitor. It seems the viola professor, Kenneth Martinson, had played Aaron’s “Three American Pieces” for solo viola, and he decided to sit in on the clinics. Mr. Martinson even joined in and played some electric viola for the group.

Afterwards, Aaron and Ken spent much time exchanging ideas. Ken showed Aaron some of his arrangements and Aaron told Ken about his latest ideas about revolutionizing the cello. He also mentioned that he might be interested in a college job one day.

A few years past, and then, lo and behold, the cello professor of SUNY Potsdam decided to take a sabbatical. Suddenly the cello position was open for the winter semester of year 2002. Ken recommended Aaron to Matthias Wexler, the cello professor. As it turned out, Matt too had played Aaron’s music and sometimes taught his “Ten American Cello Etudes” to his students. Matt recommended Aaron to the dean of the Crane School of Music and Aaron was offered the position.

Von Cello as a college professor? Could it be? Well, Aaron thought long and hard about the job. On the one hand, it was a prestigious position and he did always have a desire to teach his new ideas about the cello on the college level. On the other hand, it would take him away from his home base in New York and would end up putting the Von Cello Band on hold for the winter and spring. In the end, though he was honored by the offer, he felt he had to turn it down. It seems, at least for now, he has sold his soul to rock n’ roll!

So you see, a press release about something that didn’t happen can actually be more interesting than many a press release about something that did happen! As for Von Cello, it took him a few days to come to terms with giving up such a great opportunity, but he feels that it will all be worth it if the band continues to grow, musically and in popularity. Asked what he would like people to know about this situation he said, “I hope people will remember, when they see me rocking out on my cello like an adrenaline crazed kid, that I could have been Professor Von Cello! How many rock stars can say that?”
