B.E.A.M. Grant Program Helps Unsigned Musicians Break Financial Barriers
Deerfield, Ill., Feb. 20, 2002 — Making a living in the music world can be a tough goal to achieve. Many talented musicians go unnoticed because they don't have the resources needed to display their talents. To help make some of these life-long dreams come true, Jim Beam® Bourbon will award another $100,000 in grant money in 2002 to unsigned artists through the B.E.A.M. (Benefiting Emerging Artists in Music) program. In the past three years, the B.E.A.M. program has given $225,000 to emerging talent, providing financial assistance, musical resources and exposure to 95 recipients in 39 states. The B.E.A.M. program is open to unsigned artists from all genres. Past grant recipients come from all parts of the music world, including rock, country, classical, reggae and rap artists — not to mention an Australian Didgeridoo player and a lullabadeer (one who performs lullabies). Aspiring artists 21 years of age and older can apply for a B.E.A.M. grant by writing three short essays explaining their influencers, planned use for the grant money and dedication to their music-related careers. The B.E.A.M. Advisory Board, made up of influential musicians from various genres and music-industry executives, reviews the applications and selects finalists based on the originality, professionalism and creativity of their essay. Advisory Board co-chairs Pat DiNizio — frontman for The Smithereens, and Matthew Sweet — popular musician and songwriter, interview the finalists and help to select the beneficiaries. As Advisory Board co-chairs, DiNizio and Sweet bring more than 35 years of professional music experience to the B.E.A.M. program. Unlike many other music-related contests, B.E.A.M. grant recipients are not limited by geographic location within the United States. This gives artists in rural areas opportunities that often are available only to those in urban musical epicenters. The no-strings-attached money can be used for any music-related need. Past recipients have used the grants to purchase equipment, finish recording CDs, purchase a touring van, and work with an entertainment lawyer to assist with contractual negotiations. Grants will be awarded to qualified applicants in the United States three times during 2002, with deadlines of March 29, June 14 and Aug. 30. Applications and complete official rules are available on the Jim Beam Bourbon Web site, www.jimbeam.com, or by writing to the B.E.A.M. Advisory Board at P.O. Box 5349, New York, NY 10150. No purchase is necessary. Program is void where prohibited. The B.E.A.M. grant program is one of the many initiatives created by Jim Beam Music® — the label behind up and coming bandssm — designed to help unsigned artists advance in their musical careers.
