MTV Announces Highest Rated Quarter In History
MTV Scores Highest Rated Prime Time In Its History; Prime Time Up 35% Among Households And Up 39% Among P12-34 New York, NY, June 26, 2002 – MTV: MUSIC TELEVISION announces that 2Q'02 will rank as the highest rated quarter in history (P18-34) and is pacing to become the network's most watched second quarter among all its key demos (HH, P2+, 12-34, 12-24 and 18-34), according to Nielsen Media Research. MTV also maintains its position as the #1 cable network for the coveted 12-24 year old demographic for more than 10 years (to date). During the second quarter, MTV introduced a spate of new & established shows that have connected with the audience and led to a +35% in primetime households (average 870,000 viewers) and a +39% among P12-34 (average 809,000 viewers) compared to 2Q'01 to date. The network also dominated the cable landscape with three of the top five rated primetime telecasts of the quarter belonging to MTV ('The Osbournes' (twice) and 'The 2002 MTV Movie Awards'). 'A hot summer line up, combining a mix of new and returning hit series and exceptional specials have contributed to making this our absolute strongest quarter ever,' said Brian Graden, President of MTV & VH1. 'The 2002 MTV Movie Awards,' 'Sorority Life,' 'The Osbournes,' 'Real World XI,' 'Diary Presents Brandy: Special Delivery' and 'mtvIcon' have all earned high scores with our viewers.' Highlights from the quarter include: 'The Osbournes,' premiering 3/5, the highest rated series in MTV history grew to become the #1 rated new cable series on television among households and P12-34. The reality phenomenon consistently won its time period (Tues 10:30-11pm) beating both cable and broadcast programs. The season finale ran on 5/7 and averaged 7,254,000 viewers (P2+). Success runs in the family with daughter Kelly Osbourne's 'Making the Video' of 'Papa Don't Preach' ranking as the highest rated in Making the Video history (aired 6/11). 'The 2002 Movie Awards,' which aired on June 6, was the most watched in the show's eleven year history with more than 16 million viewers (P2+) tuning in for the premiere telecast. The show was the highest rated cable program for 2002 among P12-34, earning an 8.0, +16% versus last year's show. Additionally, the '2002 MTV Movie Awards' on MTV.com recorded its highest usage and voting numbers in Movie Awards history and was the highest single-day event on MTV.com in 2002 to date. 'MTV'S Shore Thing,' the network's annual summer afternoon programming lineup, kicked off the week of June 10 (Mon-Thurs 1-5pm), with more than 20 million viewers tuning in. Versus last year, MTV's summer afternoons are up 13% and overall, are reaching more viewers for both prime time and total day. Anchored by 'Total Request Live,' the afternoons also include new shows that round out the schedule such as the new dating show, 'Taildaters,' 'I Bet You Will,' where contestants are challenged to do various antics for a little cash and 'Becoming Presents: Wannabes,' where lucky fans get to actually become their favorite artist. Two new shows which just launched in June on MTV have already connected with viewers. The documentary mini-series 'Diary Presents Brandy: Special Delivery,' premiered 6/18 and reached 4.2 million viewers (P2+), winning its time period (Tues 10:30-11 pm) among cable networks. And the new reality show 'Sorority Life,' hit the air on 6/24, reaching 4.5 million viewers (P2+). 'mtvICON: Aerosmith,' the second icon show honoring artists for their body of work aired 4/17 and won its night among cable networks for MTV among households and 12-34 year olds, reaching 10 million viewers during the premiere telecast. And 'Real World XI' in Chicago is on pace to be the highest rated season in Real World history. Compared to last year's Real World X, Real World XI is +73% (P2+). The current season wraps July 9. And its sister show, 'Road Rules XI' is still going strong, premiering its new season on 6/17 and reaching more than 5 million viewers (P2+).
