Internet Radio Listening Hits All-Time High, Reports Measurecast
PORTLAND, Ore., July 23, 2002 - MeasureCast, Inc. (www.measurecast.com), the first company to provide Internet radio broadcasters with next-day streaming audience size and demographics data, today reported that the number of hours Internet radio fans spent listening to on-line stations rebounded during the week of July 8 after an early summer slowdown. The MeasureCast Internet Radio Index for the week of July 8-14 shot up 26 percent to an all-time high. This after the index dipped four percent during the week of June 24, and fell another 15 percent during the week of July 1. Since January 6 of this year, the total time spent listening to Web radio stations measured by MeasureCast is up 141 percent. The MeasureCast index is a representation of the trend in the total time spent listening (TTSL) to a spectrum of on-line radio stations monitored by MeasureCast. In addition, 24 of the MeasureCast Top 25 stations experienced increases in the total number of hours streamed over the Internet. Twenty-three of those stations saw an increase in audience size, or "Cume". Topping the MeasureCast Charts RADIOIO, MEDIAmazing, and Radio Margaritaville led the MeasureCast Top 10 Internet-only Stations Chart. Britain's Virgin Radio and JazzFM finished the week of July 8 as the two most-listened-to Web radio stations measured by MeasureCast. They also claimed the top two spots in the top 10 simulcast radio stations ranking, followed by WQXR, the radio station of The New York Times. Clear Channel Worldwide, Radio Free Virgin, and Warp Radio led the MeasureCast Top 10 Internet Radio Networks Chart. Demographic Highlights for the Week of July 8-14 * The peak listening day was Thursday, July 11, with 19% of all listening occurring on this day. * Internet radio listening is primarily a work-hour phenomenon, with 80% of all on-line listening occurring between 5 a.m. Pacific and 5 p.m. Pacific. * 10% of the week's listening took place over the weekend. * 28% of Internet radio listeners were between the ages of 25 and 34. 56% were younger than 35, 28% were younger than 25, and 7% were older than 55. * 71% of listeners were men; 29% were women. * In the U.S., 34% of listeners resided in the South; 28% in the West, 20% in the Northeast, and 18% in the Midwest. * Top streaming nations include the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, and Mexico.
