NABO And Song Writers Say That Detroit Candidates Must Stop Using Music Without Permission Of Artists
Detroit candidates using the old school songs Wake Up Everybody and Ain't No Stopping Us Now written by the duo of McFadden and Whitehead are on notice that the artists will pursue legal remedies to stop the theft of intellectual property. Reverend Horace L. Sheffield III, president and CEO of the National Association of Black Organizations (NABO), says that NABO supports the efforts of artists to be compensated for intellectual property. "I have spoken with Gene McFadden of McFadden & Whitehead. Mr. McFadden is incensed and prepared to take legal action that will be supported by NABO to stop the stealing of their intellectual property," said Sheffield. Sheffield takes note that only one Detroit area candidate, Wayne County Sheriff Robert Ficano, a candidate for Wayne County Executive, has legally obtained the rights by paying licensing fees to the artists for use of their song Ain't No Stopping Us Now. Ficano spokesperson Sharon Banks said that the Ficano campaign did the right thing by the artists and the Ficano campaign is the only campaign licensed to use McFadden & Whitehead material in Wayne County. "The Ficano campaign respects the artist work product. We followed the proper procedure and worked through proper channels to compensate and obtain permission to use the song Ain't No Stopping Us Now. We want to protect and preserve our right -- as the only candidate -- who has permission to use this song as our campaign theme," said Banks. A NABO investigation reveals that three Detroit candidates for the state legislature are usurping McFadden & Whitehead songs without permission. The husband and wife team of Chester and Ellen Logan that seek the offices of state representative and state senator respectively are misappropriating the song Ain't No Stopping Us Now in their political ads. Bertha Coleman Poe, the former Secretary Treasurer of the Michigan State AFL-CIO that is running for state representative, is wrongfully using the song Wake Up Everybody. Reverend Sheffield said that when those that would be lawmakers are themselves breaking the law as they seek public office mistrust of politicians is the result. "How can we trust people to make and uphold the law when the law and ethical standards of decency are trampled upon in the pursuit of an election? Too many of our musicians have died broke or lived in poverty because the unscrupulous stole their intellectual property. The stealing will end in Detroit, the birthplace of Motown," said Sheffield.
