TRADITIONAL WEST AFRICAN HEALING MUSIC
YAYA DIALLO’S CD “NANGAPE” REISSUED IN 2002

“…the album is a delightful exploration of the traditional
music of Mali in general, and of the use of the balafon in particular.”
Mike High, “Speaking Their Piece,” Cadence: The American Review of Jazz & Blues, May 1982, p. 35.

“ … Yaya Diallo, who hails from Mali, and whose congas, balafon, tama, and dounouba capture West African 4/4 and 6/8 in so lively and listenable a manner it is hard to resist them.”
Down Beat, April, 1983.

Victoria, BC, Canada, 2003 - Nangape offers a combination of varied tempos and sounds with an effect that is tantamount to a therapeutic session.

This classic 1980 instrumental recording offers a refined performance of traditional West African drumming (djembe, dounouba, tama, conga), balafon and flute music. The rhythmic flute melodies accompany three of the five selections. Two tracks, Ivoirien and Wassoulou, are reserved for the voice of the drums. The music is dedicated to Nangape Kone, an elder healer, musician and sorcerer who acted as a mentor and protector during Yaya’s childhood.

Yaya Diallo shares traditional West African music inspired from village life in Mali. His music and writings convey an intimate knowledge and experience of the traditional way of life. In Mali, the elders said, “this is not Yaya playing but the ancestors playing through him.”

Nangapè is recorded and produced in Canada.

Guide to Mali, West Africa

Yaya Diallo was born in 1946 in the village of Fienso, Republic of Mali, to a Peul father and a Minianka mother. Yaya was raised in a culture that works, worships, lives and breathes to the beat of the drum. Thanks to his mother, being from the illustrious Berthe family (hunters, county chiefs, musicians …), young Yaya had the opportunity to hear some of the best musicians of the former canton Zangasso. The old musician, healer and sorcerer Nangape Kone became his protector and mentor.

Arriving in Montreal, Canada in 1967, Yaya graduated from the University of Montreal in Chemistry in 1973. Following a brief career as a chemist, Yaya returned to traditional African music. He was a co-founder of the music and dance groups Djembe-Kan and Cleba and a member of the African Troubadours with the World Music Institute as well as a faculty member with the Creative Music Studio, Woodstock, NY, and the Omega Institute. Yaya currently teaches music and dance and facilitates workshops in addition to performing both solo and with his band Kanza. His classic album Nangape recorded in Canada, released in 1980 and reissued in 2002 on Onzou Records, brought international recognition to his work. This debut album was followed by several published works:

“ . . . the album is a delightful exploration of the traditional music of Mali in general and of the use of the balafon in particular.”
Mike High, “Speaking Their Piece, “Cadence, The American Review of Jazz & Blues, May 1982, p. 35.

The reissue of Yaya Diallo’s 1980 debut album follows several published recordings and books. The West African healing music on Nangape unites two distinct heritages, the balafon played by the sedentary Minianka and the flute from the nomadic Peul culture. The title track Nangape carries the name of the village elder, healer, musician and sorcerer who was a protector and mentor to Yaya.

Yaya Diallo, the elder percussionist from Mali, West Africa, has acquired an international reputation as a musician, healer, composer, dancer, teacher of music and dance, lecturer, storyteller and author.

· Nangape received airplay upon its release in 1980 on CBC, CBC international, and college radio in Canada and the USA as well as positive reviews in Down Beat and Cadence magazines.
· Since 1980 the popularity of West African music and “djembe” drum music in particular has become ubiquitous internationally with the internet hosting a global community of fans.
· Yaya Diallo is active internationally as a performer, teacher of dance and music, author, and guide with “The Healing Drum Tour” to Mali, West Africa.
