Victoria, BC, Canada, 2003 - Nangape offers a combination of varied tempos and sounds with an effect that is tantamount to a therapeutic session. This classic 1980 instrumental recording offers a refined performance of traditional West African drumming (djembe, dounouba, tama, conga), balafon and flute music. The rhythmic flute melodies accompany three of the five selections. Two tracks, Ivoirien and Wassoulou, are reserved for the voice of the drums. The music is dedicated to Nangape Kone, an elder healer, musician and sorcerer who acted as a mentor and protector during Yaya’s childhood. Yaya Diallo shares traditional West African music inspired from village life in Mali. His music and writings convey an intimate knowledge and experience of the traditional way of life. In Mali, the elders said, “this is not Yaya playing but the ancestors playing through him.” Nangapè is recorded and produced in Canada. ### ----------------------------------- Yaya Diallo Musician - Healer - Composer Dancer - Teacher of Music & Dance Lecturer - Storyteller - Author Guide to Mali, West Africa Yaya Diallo was born in 1946 in the village of Fienso, Republic of Mali, to a Peul father and a Minianka mother. Yaya was raised in a culture that works, worships, lives and breathes to the beat of the drum. Thanks to his mother, being from the illustrious Berthe family (hunters, county chiefs, musicians …), young Yaya had the opportunity to hear some of the best musicians of the former canton Zangasso. The old musician, healer and sorcerer Nangape Kone became his protector and mentor. Arriving in Montreal, Canada in 1967, Yaya graduated from the University of Montreal in Chemistry in 1973. Following a brief career as a chemist, Yaya returned to traditional African music. He was a co-founder of the music and dance groups Djembe-Kan and Cleba and a member of the African Troubadours with the World Music Institute as well as a faculty member with the Creative Music Studio, Woodstock, NY, and the Omega Institute. Yaya currently teaches music and dance and facilitates workshops in addition to performing both solo and with his band Kanza.
